Elda Amanda Margareta Held was born July 6, 1918, at New Salem, the daughter of George and Ida (Hoffman) Held. J. Fontana, Pastor of Bethel United Church of Christ, located southwest of Judson, baptized her on Aug. 18, 1919. It was there that she also received her religious teachings and was confirmed in 1930. She attended a local country school through the eighth grade. Common means of going to school were walking, on horseback, and by sled or skiing in winter. Because of her mother's asthma health problem she stayed at home after schooling, working as a hired girl for local families. It was a special occasion when on Oct. 11, 1936, the day of her parents 25th anniversary, Elda married Harvey Aldolf William Thiel at her parents home, south of New Salem. That date would become even more special in later years when her brothers, Harold and Chester were also married on Oct. 11. Elda and Harvey's first home was a farm located southwest of Judson while Harvey worked in the local coal mine. In the spring of 1937, they moved to Judson where they rented the Henry Albrecht farm and started farming with teams and horse drawn equipment. Their first child, Glenn was born Jan. 10, 1938. While living in Judson, Elda made extra money by washing clothes for railroad crews that stayed near the depot, earning 25 cents for doing six or seven shirts. In 1940, they rented the Louis Waechter farmstead just outside of New Salem. It was here that Betty Lou Ida joined their family on July 6, 1940, sharing Elda's birth date. It was it 1945, when they moved to the Adolf Slavick farm where Peggy Jean was born Feb. 9, 1946. In 1948, Harvey and Elda purchased the Carl Westmeyer farm where they lived until Harvey's death on Oct. 19, 1989. During their years of marriage, Harvey and Elda found music to be their main source of recreation. Noted for their polka style of dancing, they attended many dances, weddings and anniversary celebrations at Big Heart Hall and Judson Hall. In the fall of 1990, Elda moved into a home in New Salem, where she lived until she moved into Elm Crest Manor's Assisted Living Apartments in April 2002. In April 2006, she moved to Elm Crest Manor Nursing Home. Elda spent a majority of her life as a farm wife, but in later years, she gained employment at Elm Crest Manor and worked her way to being head of the CNA's. She fully retired Aug. 15, 1991 after 19½ years. She was a member of the Bethel Church Women's Guild and a home based Bible Study group for a number of years. She also served on some of the local election boards. Among her many hobbies, Elda collected bells, of which she kept a numbered master list of each bell and its giver. The love of flowers and gardening won her several awards at the Morton County Fair. Cooking, baking and a full candy bucket made for memorable gatherings of family and friends. Caramel rolls and a good cup of coffee were among the things she liked to serve the most. Elda collected friends like most people collect recipes. Always with a smile and a helping hand to anyone and everyone, she lived a life of service to others. She found fulfillment in volunteering and spent many hours helping with Hair Day at Elm Crest Manor and Meals on Wheels. In 1993, she was selected Elm Crest's Volunteer of the Year. She was also involved with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Her genuine love for people and social life made looking forward to Friday nights out with "The Gang" something that brought pleasure to her week. She took great pride in a card ministry. She made sure everyone (family and friends) received a card for special occasions or "just because," whether it was a birthday, get well, congratulations or thinking of you. Elda is survived by her children, Glenn (Judy) Thiel, Harvey, Betty (LeRoy) Moltzen, New Salem and Peggy Reuther, Mandan; eight grandchildren, Bruce (Paz) Thiel, Crystal, Minn., Darrick (Ann) Thiel, Bemidji, Minn., Delonnes (Russ) Klug, Dickinson, Tammy (Mike) Just, Gilbert, Ariz., Kevin (Shelly) Moltzen, Jamestown, Kendra Moltzen and her fiance, Mike Finck, Mandan, Micki (Blaine) Fischer, Hazen and Bobbi Reuther, Bensenville, Ill.; 14 great-grandchildren, Danny Alvarado and Katherine Thiel, Crystal, Minn., Taylor Fankhanel and Miranda Thiel, Bemidji, Minn., Kristi, Mark, Matthew, Alex and Nicholas Klug, Dickinson, Thomas and John Meier, Gilbert, Ariz., Maya Moltzen, Jamestown and Rodney and Sophia Fischer, Hazen. Also surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Eugene Kaelberer; three sisters-in-law, Randy Held, Doris Held and Olive Held; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elda was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ida (Hoffman) Held; her husband, Harvey Thiel; two grandchildren, Cheryl Ann Moltzen and Sheila Kay Thiel; a son-in-law, Rodney Reuther; her brothers, Harold, Willmer and Chester Held; and her sister-in-law, Mamie Thiel.
