In 1899 his parents moved 12 miles south of New Salem onto some railroad land and it was here they proceeded to build up a farm, Marvin and Joyce Held now live on this farm. George attended rural New Salem schools. In 1909, when George was 22 years of age, he filed on a homestead just to the southeast of his parent's land. It was the only unclaimed homestead left in the county. On October 11, 1911 George married Ida Hoffmann. Ida was one of nine children in the John and Caroline Hoffmann family. Ida was born November 12, 1893 at St. Louis, Missouri. It was in 1897 that her family moved to New Salem. The first few days they were in New Salem they lived at the Rev. Schoenhut home and then they moved north of New Salem to a farm (Ted Gaebes now live on that farm). In 1898 her family moved south of New Salem to another farm, at that time it was known as the Henry Mann farm (now known as the Norton farm). A few years later her father took up a homestead 18 miles south of New Salem. Here they lived in a sod house. In those years prairie fires were many and one surrounded the house by a few feet. Ida had to herd cattle and walk after them but because of the fire danger the cattle were never far from home. The second year on the farm Ida had to help with the care of 1 acre of onions that her dad had seeded. She had to help thin, breakdown the tops, pull and sack them. For this the family received $90.00 from that acre. With this money, flour and winter food supplies were bought. At the age of 9 Ida started school in New Salem. This school is now gone but served as a home for the Westermann family for many years. After George and Ida were married they lived on his homestead. Here they started with 2 horses, 1 cow, a few chickens and some pieces of machinery. The weather in the fall of the first year they lived there was so cold that they could not finish threshing and they had to finish it in the spring of the next year. Perseverance and hard work was what it took to make a living in those adverse years. They were both members of the Bethel Church and Ida was a member of the Bethel Guild. They had five children. Harold (deceased July 6, 1975) married Doris Thiel. Doris lives on the home place with her daughter Jinny, married to Dennis Schauer. Willmer, married Olive Timpe and they make their home at New Salem. Their children are Dorlyn, Linda, and Kathy. Dorlyn married Beverly Braun Roberts, they live at New England, North Dakota with their children Melissa and Jennifer. Linda is married to Don Sorge, they live at Washburn, North Dakota with their children. Jesse, Les and Drew. Kathy is married to Alan Sundeen, they live at Mayville, N.D. with their daughters Janna and Lyndsay. Elda, married Harvey Thiel. They live south of Judson. Their children are Glenn, Betty, and Peggy. Glenn is married to Judith Eckroth, they live at Harvey, North Dakota with their 2 sons, Bruce and Darrick. Betty is married to LeRoy Moltzen and they farm north of New Salem. Their children are Delonnes, Tamara, Kevin and Kendra. Peggy is married to Rodney Reuther and they live west of Mandan, North Dakota with their 2 daughters, Micki Lynn and Bobbi Jo. Ruth, is married to Eugene Kaelberer and they farm south of New Salem. They have 2 children, Corrie and Renelle. Corrie is married to Delbert Bumann and they live at New Salem with their children, Karla and Ryan. Renelle lives in Lennox, California. Chester is married to Maranda Vollmer and they live in Mandan, North Dakota. They have 2 children, Debbie and Becky. Debbie lives in Mandan, North Dakota and Becky is married to Dale Pletan and they live in Bismarck, North Dakota with their 2 sons, Casey and Cody. Ida died on April 1, 1962 at the age of 68. George died at the age of 84 on October 10, 1971. George lived the last 2 years of his life at Elm Crest in New salem. They are both buried at the Bethel Cemetery south of New Salem.
