Description	:	Our dear brother, uncle, and friend, Elden "Chip" Holmes, Jr., 63, of Sacramento, CA, passed away January 12, 2017, after a short battle with leukemia. Chip was born December 31, 1953, in Hastings, Nebraska to Elden and Phyllis Holmes and grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, after the family moved there in 1957. Chip graduated from high school in Soquel, CA, served for the US Navy in Antarctica, attended UCLA and graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Physics Degree, which later led him to engineering work. Chip was born December 31, 1953, in Hastings, Nebraska to Elden and Phyllis Holmes and grew up in Santa Cruz, CA, after the family moved there in 1957. Chip graduated from high school in Soquel, CA, served for the US Navy in Antarctica, attended UCLA and graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Physics Degree, which later led him to engineering work. Chip was a lifelong learner who, among many varied interests, enjoyed reading non-fiction books and listening to, and studying all types of music. For many years he served as a volunteer docent for Amtrak and the California State Railroad Museum. Chip enjoyed animals, exercising, and engaging in conversation with family and friends. He is survived by his sisters, Tonja Jantz and her husband Phil Jantz , of Granite Bay, CA, and Stacey Packard of Sacramento, CA; his nieces and nephews Justin Bross (Gloria Lee), Colin (Kelly) Bross, Cara (Jason) Alfonso, and Maree (Adam) Nicholas; and his great nephews and nieces Brooke, Evan, Audrey, Briana, Brandon, Taylor, Ryan, Jake and Ben; his beloved dog, Wrigley, and many loving friends and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a gentle and loving soul, with a stellar sense of humor, who will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace. A memorial service will be held for Elden "Chip" Holmes on February 3, 2017, at the Maidu Center at 1550 Maidu Dr. Roseville, CA at 10:00am. Published in The Sacramento Bee on Jan. 29, 2017
