Highland Recorder September 16, 1927 IN MEMORIAM One of the land marks of this county was removed in the death of E.S. Hinkle at his home close to the Highland-Pendleton line, five miles north of the village of Crabbottom, on the 5th of August 1927. He was born and reared on Dry Run, Pendleton County, Va. (now W.Va.). He reached the ripe old age of 79 years on the 30th day of July before his death. During the last 40 years of his life was spent on the farm where he died and was one of the most honored and respected citizens of the county. He was a splendid neighbor, kind to the poor and universally liked in Highland and Pendleton counties, being known as well in the latter as in the former. But few men enjoyed more seeing and talking with his friends and one of the happiest incidents of his old days, to both himself and his friends was the fact that he retained almost up to his death all his faculties. He married Sarah Nelson, of Pendleton county, April 30, 1871, to this union was born three children, Rosetta, Clara and Fannie. Rosetta died in infancy, Clara married William Simmons of Pendleton county, and died about 20 years ago. Fannie married Albert Simmons of Pendleton county, who lived with her father until his death; Funeral services were held Sunday morning following his death, at his home, conducted by Rev. Finney of the Presbyterian church. He united with the U. B. church a number of years ago. Many friends and relatives from different sections of Highland and Pendleton counties attended his funeral while nearly every one in his immediate community turned out. His body was carried to the family grave yard just west of his home and laid to rest to await the “resurrection of the just”. There is a possibility that another Hinkle family cemetery exist on Hardscrabble. Eldridge & Sarah Hinkle in the 1900 Highland County Census are living next to Texas Hinkle family. In the 1920 Highland County Census Eldridge & Sarah Hinkle are living in the same area close to Texas Hinkle and Daniel Colaw (Daniel Colaw is buried down the mountain from this location at the Colaw Family grave yard) . This suggest that this is the Hinkle family grave yard referred to in the newspaper. Daughter Clara (Hinkle) Simmons born c. 1873, died January 8, 1905,near Cave, W.Va.
