She was born on June 13, 1915, the daughter of John and Emma (Radke) Pieper. Read More	******************* Published Chanute, KS - March 18, 2008 Eleanor Elizabeth Pieper, 92, a life-long resident of Chanute, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Chanute Healthcare Center. She was born on June 13, 1915, the daughter of John and Emma (Radke) Pieper. She graduated from Chanute High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Balfour Award, the Chanute Junior College (NCCC) and was a member of Sigma Alpha. She received her B.A. Degree from Valparaiso University and was a member of the Pi Gamma Mu Honor Fraternity. At the University of Kansas she earned her Masters Degree in English. She also did post-graduate work at the University of Southern California, Michigan State University and Kansas State Teachers College. Elizabeth taught for 38 years, 2 at Royster followed by 36 years of teaching English at Chanute High School. During her teaching career she was also Activities Director and the Public Relations person, doing two radio shows a week for the high school and junior college. She was the Student Council and National Honor Society sponsor. She was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute, taught Sunday School for many years and was on many church committees. She remained an active member until her health failed. She did a lot of volunteer work. As a member of the Safari Museum and former Board Chairperson, member of the NCCC Endowment and Foundation Board, former chair for the Zoning Board of Appeals worked at the Hospital Snack Bar, helped to organize the Chanute Community Council when it functioned, worked to form the Community Concerts, has been a member of the Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center and served as the treasurer for many years and was a docent for the Chanute Art Gallery. She would also drive people to Wichita and Kansas City for their medical appointments. She belonged to many organizations including the Business and Professional Women's Club for 48 years where she was honored as Woman of the Year. She was also a past-president twice and served as chairman for various committees. She was a past-president of the Torchlighters, a member of the Neosho Valley HDU, belonged to the local chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a member and president of the former Evening With Friends, a life member of the PTA and was given the honor of being named First Lady of the Year by Beta Sigma Phi. She belonged to the Chanute Retired Teachers Association and they recently honored her by giving her a life membership to the State Retired Teachers Association for all the work she had done locally. She served on the State Department of Education Advisory Council for Title IV ESEA, belonged to the Independence, KS Community Concert Association, the Iola Community Theatre and the Iola Cultural Arts. Her hobbies included reading and traveling. She had traveled to all the continents. Survivors include four cousins; Junior Gerken, Humboldt, KS, Mary Numrich, Albuerque, NM, Robert Pieper, Grove Heights, MN, and Dr. Richard Radke, Olathe, KS; and many friends whom she considered family. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be March 20, 2008 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chanute, Kansas. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas. Memorials in her name may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Endowment Fund. **********************
