Description	:	Elenor's headstone stands at the west end of the cemetery near the fence line with about 15 other headstones (most broken now and unreadable). Elenor died in 1856, 20 years before Greenwood Cemetery came into existence. She would have been originally interred in one of the 3 cemeteries in Orangeville at the time of her death. Orangeville had three graveyards — the Bethel Presbyterian Church and Cemetery where the post office is today, St. Mark’s Anglican Burying Ground on Broadway and the Methodist Church and Cemetery on the south side of Church Street. When Greenwood was established in Oct. 1876, a 10 year process began, to relocate those interred in the 3 cemeteries into Greenwood cemetery, so that the 3 cemeteries in town could close. When the process was complete, 15 stones were left over and it couldn't be determined where (or if) the bodies were interred in Greenwood. The stones were left in a pile in Greenwood Cemetery. Adding to the problem, Greenwood Cemetery's burial records were destroyed in a fire in 1928. Unless you can find a headstone, marker, obituary or note in the family bible, the evidence that an ancestor was interred here prior to 1928 is all but impossible to know for certain. In 1953, when the town of Orangeville took over maintenance of the site, they placed these piled stones in the wooded area in back of the cemetery (west-end near fence) in the event family could help determine where their ancestor was interred. It must be noted that bones were uncovered in the building of the post office, so where Eleanor's remains are is a mystery. The headstone is the only evidence we have that Elenor Ritchey died in Orangeville on June 7, 1856. Perhaps her family will find this page and connect her to her family.
