Description	:	Elias was born on the family farm in Hamilton County, southwestern Ohio, the sixth of nine children and the second son. His father died in 1834, when he was 10 years old and his mother died just two years later. As both sets of grandparents had also passed, it's likely that Elias lived with an aunt, uncle, or perhaps his older sister Henrietta who married Andrew McGrew in 1836. Read More	Elias was born on the family farm in Hamilton County, southwestern Ohio, the sixth of nine children and the second son. His father died in 1834, when he was 10 years old and his mother died just two years later. As both sets of grandparents had also passed, it's likely that Elias lived with an aunt, uncle, or perhaps his older sister Henrietta who married Andrew McGrew in 1836. Although all of his living siblings have been found in the 1850 U.S. Census, Elias has not. His brother Aaron went to California during the Gold Rush, so perhaps Elias was also somewhere out West. Elias and Asenath, both in their mid 20s, were married in 1851, probably in Hamilton County, Ohio (no marriage record has been found). Their first born son, Ennis, was born in Cincinnati. Over the next sixteen years Asenath bore five more children. Within a few years the family moved to central Indiana. In the 1860 U.S. Census, they lived in Walnut Township of Montgomery County and Elias listed his occupation as shoemaker. A near neighbor was his brother David, a wagon maker. Elias was of prime age to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War, but there is no known record that he served. By the 1870 U.S. Census, Elias had moved his family to the Middle Township of Hendricks County, Indiana and he made his living as a farmer. Elias died in his 50s from unknown cause. He is probably buried in Hendricks or Warren County, Indiana. Note: Elias' surname is shown as "Crane" in all known records. His children all used "Crain."
