Description	:	Burial: 18 Aug. 1916 Ennis was the oldest of six known children - three boys and three girls. He grew up on the family farm in central Indiana. When of age, he evidently travelled west to Iroquois County, Illinois, where his uncle, David Brown Crane, had a farm. He grew up on the family farm in central Indiana. When of age, he evidently travelled west to Iroquois County, Illinois, where his uncle, David Brown Crane, had a farm. Ella (age 19) and Ennis (age 25) were married in Vermilion County, Illinois in 1877. They took in and raised Ella's orphaned nephew, Charles Gouty, as both of his parents died when he was a toddler. In the 1880 Census they lived on a farm in Vermilion County with Ella's widowed mother, Margaret Talbert Gouty. Ennis and Ella had four children in Illinois by 1885, when mother Margaret died. About this time, Ennis' mother, Asenathial Crain came to live with them. Shortly after mother Asena's death in 1891, Ennis moved his family to Elma, in Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) County in the new State of Washington. Charles Gouty, age 18, came with them, and was working in a Kamilche, Mason County lumber camp in 1892. Their last child, Audrey, was born in Washington in 1895. Ennis made his living as a farmer and lodging house keeper. From 'The Cranes Nest' by Edna Crain Matthews (1st entry): "Ennis Mahoney Crain was a cattle buyer in Alvin, Illinois. Stopping at a small store to inquire of some men sitting on the steps the direction of Collings ranch. Meanwhile a very pretty young lady rode up dismounted, tied her steed to the hitching post, and entered store for an errand. Ennis was enthralled at her beautiful long flowing hair and lovely brown eyes and with such ease she rode away. He remained to inquire who's daughter she was and from and where their ranch. Men answered 'Oh! she is the only daughter of Irving Gouty's, living on 40 acre track southeast of here' (Editor: Irvin Gouty was actually Ella's older brother. Her parents, John and Margaret Gouty were still alive in 1877). He kept thinking of her and with such grace, until the next few days he found himself calling at the Irving Gouty farm and seeing Ella May quite often and soon they were married and living on part of her father's land. Four children were born to this marriage, Eva, Lee, Stella, and Edna. Ennis had an only brother Oscar who had gone west several years ago and landed in Aberdeen, Wash. and had a livery stable and draying which was a very busy and paying concern. Oscar kept writing to Ennis that he should come out and help him and other work was plenty. After a few years of hardship and his children were older, he and 'Ma' decided he should go as she could carry on at home, so they sold some pigs, calves and chickens and 'Ma' was to come later with family, so 'Ma' packed a box lunch, some clothing and Ennis was soon on his way for the West. He came by train, sitting up in the chair car 4 or 5 days until he reached Tacoma, then on to Aberdeen. After a few month's with brother, he decided best for him to leave Aberdeen as he saw no future with a city built on stilts, planking and sawdust. Rain all times. He needed a garden spot and animals for food if family was coming so he came north (sic, east) decided Elma would be a good place to live and farm a little. He bought or bargained for 5 acres back of Hunter's Prairie school house with small house and we all attended school there (ed.: ca.1891). Eva being 11, Lee 9, Stella 7, and Edna 5, we had lovely garden and mother canned and made great crocks of jelly. Thick old B Berries were extremely huge and we could pick 5 gal can full in no time and fishing great. We had ducks in swamp and had fun hunting eggs. (2nd entry) Gouty: Our trip here mother sold off farm, live stock, household furnishing pack a large basket of food including a ham, bread, butter anything she could carry as the train was fitted with a car where we could cook and table to eat at was for tourist. We had 2 berths up 1 up and 1 down. She and Eva, and Stella used lower, Chas., Lee and I (Edna) slept in upper, little old me laid at foot, Dad met us in Olympia. I fell (seemed) off train into his arms. How did we get to Elma? No tract down here them neighbors Brumbaugh - Prickets. End of story." From a letter to Bea Crain Zirk from her half-sister Hazel Lovell Reed, Jan.16, 1982: "Dear Bea, Thought I'd better drop you a note before I forget- getting to that age y'know- I talked to my neighbor, who is 81. She told me a little about your grandfather ('Pappy' Crain, they called him). She said he had bought 40 acres from her Dad, Mr. Schouweiler, in 1907 but had lived up the Hurd Road before that and was living at that time in the apartments or boarding house, she called it, in Elma. They didn't live on the 40 acres south of Hunter's Prairie, just farmed it. She said he used to take his team of horses down there. Kids on the prairie used to go for walks on Sundays and he would give them vegetables. She (Carrie Williamson) said he was a big, jolly fellow and everyone liked him. There is probably a lot more information floating around if we knew where to find it... Weather is so nice; have been working outside every chance I get. Lots to do.
