| Description | : | Elias was the fourth of ten children born to Samuel Carey, II and his wife, Anna McPherson. Eli was a farmer. He married Mary Kelso on February 2, 1837 in Highland County, Ohio. They had ten children; five sons and five daughters. Eli suffered from a lung disease (similar to emphysema today) which caused his declining health and eventual death.
