SCALES A shadow of gloom was cast over the entire community the first of the week when word came that Elias H. Scales had passed away Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Olive E. Sharp, at Caldwell, Kansas, where he had gone only a few weeks ago to spend the winter. Mr. Scales suffered a stroke of paralysis about a year ago and has been in very poor health for a number of months. The body was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. O. Brown in Union township Monday, and funeral services were held from the New York church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Newton Sours, his pastor. A male quartet, composed of L. G. Davis, F. A. Burton, F. B. Fry and W. H. Dayton, sang at the service, which was largely attended by former neighbors and friends. Interment was made in the New York cemetery. Mr. Scales was a Civil War veteran and a member of the Robert Jackson post G.A.R. and for many years was Adjutant of the post. The following obituary was read at the services: Elias H. Scales, son of Samuel P. and Emma L. Scales, was born August 8, 1843, in Licking county, Ohio, and died November 13, 1926, at Caldwell, Kansas, at the home of his daughter. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Steuben county, Indiana, where his mother died on his eighth birthday. A few years later, he and his father moved to Michigan. He enlisted on his nineteenth birthday in the Fourth Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. After three months active service and five months in the hospital, he was honorably discharged. He joined the family in Knox county, Illinois, moving to Wayne county, Iowa, in 1869, where he made his home the remainder of his life.
