Description	:	Joseph R. Scales, son of Samuel and Emma Jagger Scales was born in Licking County, Ohio and died at his farm home near Corydon, Iowa. He was 96 years old. In the spring of 1869 the Samuel Scales family moved to Wayne County, Iowa. Redmond stayed in Illinois until the following winter when he came to Iowa bringing a team of horses riding one and leading the other. He spent the rest of his life in the county. Scales, son of Samuel and Emma Jagger Scales was born in Licking County, Ohio and died at his farm home near Corydon, Iowa. He was 96 years old. In the spring of 1869 the Samuel Scales family moved to Wayne County, Iowa. Redmond stayed in Illinois until the following winter when he came to Iowa bringing a team of horses riding one and leading the other. He spent the rest of his life in the county. He was married to Susannah Miller Lanier January 30, 1878. To them was born one son, Samuel Lester, February 20, 1889. His wife, Aunt Sude, as she was called died June 6, 1932. He is survived by his son, Lester; two grandsons, Joe in Service at Camp Phillips, Kansas, and Bert of the army air corps at home awaiting his call; two grandaughters, Bernidine Evens and Christine Grove; three great granddaughters, Betty Chris, Mary Jane and Jacklyn Evans; a sister, Allie Merrill and a brother, O.A. Scales; a step-son, Tanch Lanier; two step-grandsons, J.N. Wood and Lyle Lanier; and a step-granddaughter, Myrell Johnson. Near the close of the Civil War he offered his servicese to the Union but was rejected because of defective hearing. Late in life he became a member of the Church of Christ of Corydon in which he was an elder for a number of years and at one time was church treasurer. For the past ten years, since the death of his wife, he has made his home with his son, Lester, where he has been active in farm work until his final days, a fine example of health and stamina.
