Read More	ELIAS MOORHEAD was born April 14, 1844, in Licking County, Ohio, and nine years later his parents removed to Marion County, Iowa, whence after a residence of four years, they came to Kansas, locating in Lyon County. In the spring of 1857, his father bought a claim of 160 acres, situated on the Neosho River, about five miles northwest of Emporia. Upon this farm the subject of this sketch remained until August, 1882, when he enlisted as private in Company E, Eleventh Regiment, Kansas Volunteers. He participated in all the engagements in which his company took part, with the single exception of the battle at Lexington, Mo., being at that time unfit for duty, by reason of sickness. Was mustered out at Fort Riley, August 7, 1865. Returned to Lyon County, and engaged in farming, in which he continued until 1867, when he formed a partnership, with Mr. N. Wise, and for two years operated a saw-mill at Americus. He then sold his interest to his partner, and for two years after was engaged in carpentering. He then engaged in house, carriage and sign painting at Americus, which business he has since followed. Mr. Moorehead has held the office of Constable of Americus Township five years, and is now serving his third term as Township Clerk, having been re-elected in February, 1883. He is a member of Americus Lodge, No. 109, A., F. & A. M. He married Miss Clara F. Mr. Moorhead had been in failing health for several years. He was taken critically ill Saturday night and did not rally, being unconscious most of the time. Mr. Moorhead moved to Americus with his parents in the 50's and volunteered for service early in the Civil War. He lost a brother in the service. He was County Commissioner from the north end of the county for three terms. He is survived by his wife and six children: George Moorhead, of Arkansas City; Robert Moorhead, of California; Mrs. Inez Pickering, of Americus; Mrs. Mabel Forbeck, of Emporia; Ralph Moorhead, Coffeyville, and Miss Leila Moorhead, of Americus. ~The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 27 Jun 1918 _____ THE FUNERAL OF ELIAS MOORHEAD The funeral services of Elias Moorhead, who died Wednesday, were held at the home in Americus on Sunday at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. M. R. Molesworth, pastor of the Americus Methodist Church preached the sermon and the Methodist Church choir had charge of the music. The floral offerings were especially beautiful, there being several pieces from the different lodges and orders to which Mr. Moorhead belonged. Interment was made in the Americus Cemetery. The Americus Lodge A. F. & A. M. had charge of the services at the grave. The pall-bearers, who were selected from that order, were H. H. Bell, Harvey Brown, Charles Lechler, Ed Simons, John A. Sims and S. E. Winters. Elias Moorhead was born April 14, 1844, on a farm in Licking County, Ohio. In the fall of 1852 he moved with his parents to Marion County, Iowa, and the family located on a farm on the Des Moines River. In the spring of 1857 he moved to Breckenridge, now Lyon County, Kansas, and located on the Neosho River northwest of Emporia on what is now known as the Atkinson farm, and remained on the farm until 1862. There were but three houses in Emporia the first time he visited the town. On August 23, 1862, he enlisted in the army for the remainder of the war, and was mustered out at Fort Riley, Kan., August 16, 1865. He belonged to Company E, Eleventh Kansas Cavalry. The death of Mr. Moorehead leaves but three members in the Americus G.A.R., T. B. Davis, George Fry and J. S. Gibson. At the close of the war Mr. Moorehead farmed, then ran a sawmill. Later he took up the occupation of painting and paperhanging and worked at it fourteen years. Later he took up the carpenter trade which he followed until he was taken sick last April. Mr. Moorehead served his community in the offices of township clerk and township trustee, and held the office of county commissioner for twelve years, which is the longest term of years any commissioner ever has served in this county. He was married to Clara F. Wilkinson, who survives him, at Americus, April 25, 1872. To Mr. and Mrs. Moorehead were born seven children, six of whom survive Mr. Moorehead. They are George H. Moorehead, of Arkansas City; Mrs. Inez Pickering, of Americus; Mrs. Mabel Forbeck, Emporia; Robert Moorehead, of Raymond, Wash.; Ralph Moorehead, Americus, and Miss Leila Moorehead, Americus. One sister, Mrs. Marshall Hurst, of San Diego, Calif., also survives him. One daughter, Miss Nellie Moorehead, died December 20, 1907.
