Long was born at Victor, Iowa, on May 8, 1855, and passed away at St. Edward, Nebraska. December 18, 1940, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 10 days. He was the youngest of a family of five children of James B. Long and Frances Trimble Long, all of whom have preceded him in death. His brothers and sisters were Warren Long, who died in 1888; Winfield Long, better known as 'Fid" Long, who died in 1907; Mrs. Addie Pehlps, who died in 1934 and Mrs. Jennie Reynoldson, who died in 1938. E.T. Long was about 16 years of age when the famiy moved from Iowa to Boone county, Nebr. in April of 1871. At that time St. Edward or even its struggling frontier predecessor, Waterville, had not come into existence. James Long and his older sons took homesteads alongt the Beaver River, north of the present town of St. Edward. As soon as E.T. was old enough, he too acquired land, a part of which joined his father's homestead and is the farm known today as the Long home three miles north of town. Few people were better authority on the early history of Boone county and this locality in particular than was E.T. Long. His experiences with drought, flood, blizzards, prairie fires and other frontier hardships, even to Indian skirmishes would fill volumes far stranger than fiction. He prided himself on being a factor in developing this wild open prairie country into the modern community that we know. Nothing pleased him better than to related those early day adventures and his passing removes from Boone county its longest time resident. Mr. Long had lived on the same farm, continuously for 69 years. The burning of the old farm house with its tender memories, last July 24th, was a blow from which he never recovered. He never seemed to shake off the dazed attitude that came over him as he viewed the ashes of his home and the pricelss historical items that it had contained. Mr. Long was baptized and reared in the Methodist faith and remained true to that church through his lifetime. His early education was received in Iowa and he was an apt pupil in the stern School of Experience. In his younger days he was affiliated with the Odd Fellow and the Woodmen Fraternal orders at St. Edward. Mr. Long was twice married, his first wife was Anna Warner, to whom he was wed on March 17, 1894. to this union were born three sons, Forrest B. and Asher D., of St. Edward and E.T. Jr., of Orlando, Fla. [Mrs. Long passed away in Orlando, Florida in 1968] His second marriage occurred in 1934 to Mrs Martha Gunderman, who survives him. He is also survivied by two granddaughters, Maxine Long, of Omaha, and Marecella Long, of St. Edward, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews and more distant relatives. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at St. Edward at two o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. and Mrs. E.L. Peterson. Duet selections, "Rock of Ages' and "Going Down the Valley" were rendered by Mrs. Frank Sokol and Mrs. Hazel Condreay with Mrs. A.P. Peterson at the piano Burial was made at the Evergreen Cemetery, pall bearers being three nephews and three grandnephews, Robert, James, Clarence, Clair, Brock and Glenn Reynoldson.
