There final services were conducted by the three ministers and all that was mortal of E. D. Marsh was consigned to mother earth. Elijah D. Marsh was born at McKenzie Corner, New Brunswick, May 12, 1855. He had remarked often that he just escaped being born a citizen of the United States, as the place of his nativity lies just across the border line from Holton, Maine. While he hailed from the British dominion, it only required the time allotted by law for him to become as loyal an American citizen as any native born. He was loyal to the laws, not only to the state of his adoption, but to the United States. When 12 years of age he started out to make his own way through the world and started to work at North Richmond, N. B., a town about 30 miles from his home town. He left New Brunswick in 1877 and arrived in Sheridan March 29 of that year. The day of his arrival he went to work at the Broadguage mine at Brandon, located by the late Albert Cisler. He continued to work at the mine until harvest time, when he accepted a position as cook for the J. K. Hartt and Samuel Taylor saw mill crew of men on upper Wisconsin creek. He was later put in charge of the circular saw in the mill, a position he held for several years. He was later employed at the Hermesmyer saw mill above Brandon. In the spring of 1882 he bought the George Hardesty property in the north part of town which was the site where the first cabin was built by M. A. Hatfield in 1864. December 9, 1882, he was married to Miss Lizzie E. Means, a daughter of the late Captain Means, a pioneer who came to Bannack in the sixties. She died in October 1889. December 4, 1890, he was married to Miss Amanda Sink of the Laurin district. After discontinuing work in the saw mills Mr. Marsh turned his attention to farming and stock raising. He had a fine herd of thoroughbred cattle and he added to his land holdings and improved the home property, making a modern home of the old historic building, where the family resided until 1919, when he sold the old home and ranch property to the present owner, O. A. Schultz, and built the modern home on Mill street. Mr. Marsh was a public spirited man and took an active interest in the up-building of the town and county. He was road supervisor for several years. When the town of Sheridan was incorporated in 1893 he was elected alderman from ward 3 when the town had three wards - an office he held eleven years. He also served as Mayor one term. He was an ardent worker for the up-building of the schools and was trustee of school district No. 5 for several years. In 1900 he was elected county commissioner and gave the county an economical administration. He was also identified with the building of the new Methodist church in 1905 and was one of the trustees from that time until called to the church triumphant. His home was a hospitable one and the stranger within his gates was always given a cordial welcome. He was ever ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in sickness and distress and he will be sadly missed not only by his family but by the community at large. He was a kind and indulgent husband and father and grandfather. He is survived by his widow and nine children, Wilbur Marsh of Sheridan, and Mrs. O. B. Gentry of Ashland by his first marriage and Mrs. C. E. Miller and Mrs. R. A. Rodgers of Pasadena, Calif.; Harvey Marsh of Missoula, Vernon, Glenn, Ted and Miss Grace Marsh of Sheridan. Eleven grandchildren survive as do two great grandchildren. The family circle is broken and there is a vacant chair in the home. He is gone but not forgotten and may they find consolation in Him "who doeth all things well." ~~ Montana Death Certificate shows Elijah Daniel Marsh died on November 8, 1931 at the Murray Hospital in Butte, Silver Bow County: age 74; born in Holten, Maine; married, Amanda Marsh; farmer; father, Elijah Daniel Marsh; mother, N. Lawrence; remains shipped to Sheridan for burial. (Although the death certificate shows that he was born in Maine, the obituary, the attached marriage certificate and a biographical sketch in 'Pioneer Trails and Trials,' Madison County, both show New Brunswick.)
