Elinor Caroline Sheffield, age 69, of Gainesville, Florida passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 10:15am at Haven Hospice House due to a sub dermal hematoma. Elinor and her twin sister Elaine were born in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 22, 1939 to Marie Geiger Sheffield and George Edison Sheffield. Many locals may remember Elinor as the woman who miraculously survived 10 days lost in the woods in the summer of 2006. Elinor had taken her dog, Peaches, for a walk on June 20, 2006 and, when she did not return, her brother David reported her missing on June 21. Elinor was found in remarkable health when her poodle Peaches was spotted by a construction worker at Cazabella Condominiums. The family is very thankful for the exhaustive searches conducted by the townspeople and organizations. Elinor attended P.K. Younge Laboratory School with her twin sister Elaine from kindergarten to graduation. Elinor and Elaine then went to the University of Florida where Elinor received her M.S. in Physical Education. Elinor's best friends were Nancy Haynes and Josephine Scott. It was at the University that Elinor met and married John Houston Brantner. Elinor had her first child at 24 years old and named her Laura. Following her divorce, Elinor moved to Pensacola where she met and married Leslie Vernon Gustin. Elinor and Leslie had two children, Eileen and Frederick. A few years after Frederick was born, Elinor divorced again and went back to Gainesville to live in her trailer on SW 19th Avenue. This was a difficult time for Elinor as she struggled with the demands of raising three energetic children alone. Elinor was very involved in the Equal Rights Amendment and feminism. Elinor became a lesbian and had loving relationships with girlfriends Chip, Kay, Karen, and others during the seventies and eighties. (I am sorry that I can not remember all the names). Elinor single-handily turned her 10X35 trailer into a double-wide by adding two bedrooms, a bath room and a florida room. Needless to say, Elinor was a very determined woman! Nearly every weekend she would take a break from the construction and pack up her three children and head out for adventure. Among her favorite places were Cedar Key, Lake Alice, High Springs and Lake Walberg. Elinor was also a very athletic and independent woman. While in her fifties, Elinor ran marathons including the Boston marathon and a Marathon in Paris, France. Back in Gainesville, Elinor became a member of the Saint Augustine Catholic Church. Elinor is survived by two daughters, Laura Kathleen Rubalcaba and Eileen Francis Balaton and one son, Frederick (Rich) Edison Gustin. Laura's children are Mathew (16), Lindsey (13) and Rita (8) of Sacramento, California. Eileen and Ed Balaton's children are Michael (9) and Christina (7) of San Diego, California. Rich and Cynthia Gustin's children are Ryan (9) and Riley (4) of St. Marys Georgia. Elinor is also survived by her brothers Malcom G. Sheffield of Hawthorne and David F. Sheffield of Archer and twin sister Elaine Marcy of Warren, Pennsylvania. Elinor is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Robert V. Sheffield and sister, Jean M. Sheppard. A Memorial Service will take place Monday, October 12, during the Noon Mass at Saint Augustine's Catholic Church, 1738 W. University Ave. 32603 at 12:00pm. The family is making arrangements for Elinor to be interned at Forrest Meadows East with members of her family. The family asks that donations in lieu of flowers be made to Project Lifesaver, a program of the Alachua County Sherriff's Office that gives Alzheimer's patients a special bracelet to wear. The bracelet emits a signal that can be tracked in case the individual goes missing. Elinor's Mottos were: "Quality, not Quantity" and "Follow Dreams, not Rules".
