Eliza Elizabeth McWilliams was born near Prairie City, Jasper county, Iowa, March 5, 1855, the daughter of William and Sarah McWilliams, and died at Creighton, Nebraska, Thursday, May 3, 1928, age 73 years, 1 month and 28 days. Her mother died when she was a child and she and her only brother went to live with John H. and Eliza Phillips near Prairie City. In 1863 she crossed the plains in an ox caravan from Prairie City to Boulder, Colo. with her father who had just been discharged from the army. Two years later they returned to Iowa. On March 6, 1873 she was married to Walter Alexander Strain and they started housekeeping on the old Johnson place and later removed to the Stalekup farm near Prairie City. The lure of the west was strong in their hearts and on October 1, 1877, Mr. and Mrs. Strain with their young son, Orville, drove with a wagon from Prairie city, Iowa to the mouth of Soldier Creek, west of Niobrara, Nebraska. Mr. Strain homesteaded where he would later found Knoxville. The first winter was spent in a clapboard dugout, moving to a homestead the next spring. In 1884 because of the ill health of Mrs. Strain the family then consisted of Orville, Elvin and Effie, removed from Nebraska to Bear Creek, Wyoming. They returned to the homestead that winter, but Mrs. Stain's health had been so much benefited that residence was again taken up the following year. They returned to Nebraska a year later In 1888 they removed to Bazile Mills, Nebr., where they lived until the following spring when they removed to the Renne farm, 5 miles northwest of Creighton, Nebraska, where they lived for three years, then they came to Creighton and have since lived on the home place. Mrs. Strain enjoyed average good health until seven years ago when her limbs began to fail her. Slowly she lost control of her legs and for the last three years had been confined to a wheel chair. During all the years of her illness, her husband was in constant and faithful attendance. Eight children came to bless the happy union of Walter and Eliza Strain. Lily Belle died in infancy and lies in Griffis cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa. The surviving children are Orville of Calif., Elvin of S.D., Thurl, Effie (J.L. Packard), Edith (J.C. Foster), Elda (Richard Kellogg) of Lincoln, Nebr., Vernon of Sioux City, Iowa. Her only brother, John S. McWilliams of Buffalo, Wyo., a half sister, Mrs.Azor O. Scott, 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild, an adopted daughter, Mrs. Rose Fisher of Buffalo, Wyo and an only cousin, Ann Amos of Spencer, Nebr. also survive her. The W.A. Strain home at Creighton for thirty six years has been open house to the young people of northeast Nebraska who affectionately referred to Mr. and Mrs. Strain as Aunt Lide and Uncle Walt. The exemplary life of Aunt Lide has been a shining beacon to guide both old and young in the ways of truth and righteous living. A life time member of the Methodist church, she was ever constant and steadfast in the faith. Creighton and northeast Nebraska mourn with the husband and family the departure of a wonderful Christian character whose influence long will be felt in this community. Funeral services were held at the family home on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Earl Bowen, an old friend of the Strain family, who spoke befittingly of the life of this noble and good woman. The floral offerings were beautiful and many and this in itself attested to the esteem in which she was held by her friends, not only in Creighton, but friends from far away who remembered this good woman. The remains were interred in Greenwood cemetery.
