Roy Richmond of David City officiating, were held at the grave at 2:30 in the afternoon. The Odd Fellow Lodge, of which Mr. Strain was a member, also conducted the rites at the grave. The body lay in state in the Hengstler Chapel here from 12 noon to 2:30. The following obituary was taken from the Lincoln Sunday Journal and Star. Walter Alexander Strain, 86, was born at Abbingdon, Knox county, Ill., May 7, 1851 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.L. Packard, in Lincoln, May 15, 1937. He married Miss Elizabeth McWilliams March 6, 1873 at Prairie City, Ia. In the fall of 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Strain drove in a covered wagon to their homestead in Knox county, Nebraska. The journey from Prairie City to their Knox county homestead at the mouth of Soldier Creek on the Running Water, required a full month. On Oct. 1, 1877, the family began housing itself in a dugout, where they spent their first winter on the Nebraska prairies. As a means of earning a living Mr. Strain worked that winter at Walls Mills or hauled lumber into Niobrara. Here, too, logs were cut and hewn that winter and the first house erected on the homestead to which they moved in the spring of 1878. In 1879 Mr. Strain was appointed postmaster by Postmaster General David McKee and named his post office home, Knoxville, where the family continued to reside and Mr. Strain served as postmaster 12 years. In 1878 Mr. Strain also helped cut logs and erect the first school house in Knox county and that winter seven American and seven Bohemian children attended that school. In May, 1878, after Mr. and Mrs. Strain had moved to their homestead at Knoxville, the battle between the Sioux and Ponca Indian tribes was fought on the site of that first dugout home. Mr. and Mrs. Strain were of hardy, courageous pioneer stock and endured all the attendant hardships of pioneering, Indian skirmishes, consecutive drouths and the memorable grasshopper years. The sufferings and privations of the big April snow storm, the historic Niobrara flood of 1881 and the great blizzard of Jan. 12, 1888, in which two neighbor women were frozen to death, were only a few of their many hardships and experiences. In addition to his farming duties, Mr. Strain was an active auctioneer. He cried his first Knox county sale Sept 15, 1878. For a period of more than thirty years he continued as one of the most outstanding auctioneers in northeastern Nebraska. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Strain, of whom seven survive; Orville S. Strain of Van Nuys, Calif., Elvin F. Strain of Gregrey, S.D.. Mrs. Effie Mae Packard, Mrs. Edith I. Brown and Thurl B. Strain, all of Lincoln, Mrs. Elda A. Kellogg of Concord, N.H., Vernon W. Strain of Sioux City, Ia. The eighth, Lillian B., died in infancy. Mr. Strain also has living 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Strain was not old enough to enlist as a soldier in the Civil war, but in 1864 he was elected and served as captain of a company of home militia and continued to serve as such officer to the end of the war. The Strain family moved from their homestead to Creighton, Nebr. in 1892, where their children received their common and high school education, and where the family continued to reside until Mrs. Stain's death, May 3, 1828. Since that time Mr. Strain has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.L. Packard in Lincoln. Prayer services will be held at the Splain, Schnell & Griffiths mortuary, Sunday.
