C. Clark Crossed the Plains in 1852. Early Settler in the Cowlitz valley Another of the aged pioneers of Cowlitz County crossed the Great Divide Saturday morning when Mrs. A. C. Clark of the west side passed away. With her husband Mrs. Clark started from Troy, Iowa, in May 1852 on their long journey by ox-team across the plains, arriving on the Columbia River late in the fall of that year. To the younger generations in the civilized Pacific Northwest the difficulties and dangers that beset the early pioneers on their long and trying journey across the plains can scarcely be realized. It required a bold heart to break all home ties and launch forth upon that 2,500 miles journey, and it was to the early pioneers of whom Mrs. Clark was one, that we owe the establishment of our present great state in the Pacific Northwest. She lived to see the realization of her dreams in the mighty growth and development of the northwest. Elisa Jane Baker was born in Ohio, December 21, 1832 and passed away Jan 20th 1917 in her 85th year. She was united in marriage to Alexander Carroll Clark in Ohio (mistake should be Missouri) July 22, 1849, and to this union nine children were born as follows: George, Eva, Laura, Ira, Charles, Walter, Guy and two others who died in infancy. Two children, Charles and Walter survive to mourn their mother's death as do 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Following their hazardous journey across the plains in 1852 the Clark family came to the Cowlitz valley to make their home and Mrs. Clark has been a resident north of Kelso for nearly sixty-five years. Her husband died Feb 26, 1886, and she continued to make her home with her sons, Walter and Charles until her death. Funeral services were conducted from the family resident Monday afternoon by Rev. H. E. Greening. Interment was made in the Catlin cemetery.
