Eliza was born in Canton, Ohio, on November 3, 1830, the third of nine children of Louis Kyle and Sarah Snyder. In Ohio in 1851, she married Jerome Neely, and they went to California, where he died in 1852. They had one son, James Neely, born in California. Eliza was born in Canton, Ohio, on November 3, 1830, the third of nine children of Louis Kyle and Sarah Snyder. In Ohio in 1851, she married Jerome Neely, and they went to California, where he died in 1852. They had one son, James Neely, born in California. Eliza then removed to Iowa, where she resided ten years on the farm of her uncle. In 1863 she moved to Denver, Colorado, married Adam Van Brocklin that fall, and they went to Nevada City, Alder Gulch, Montana Territory, in the spring of 1864. After five years, they took up land in the Ruby Valley, two miles south of the village of Laurin. Mr. Van Brocklin died in1881, but Eliza and her son continued to reside on the homestead and maintain the farm and ranch operations. Her religious faith is that of the Society of Friends. ~~~~~ 'The Dillon Tribune,' Dillon, MT 21 Sept. 1917, page 10, image 10: Sheridan, Sept. 20. -- The grim reaper has laid a heavy hand on the old-timers and pioneers of Madison county the past year. Mrs. Van Brocklin a pioneer of 1864 was suddenly called last Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Conrey at Alder where she was visiting. She was in her usual health and spirits on retiring Friday night but was found unconscious Saturday morning and passed peacefully away. Deceased was born November 3, 1830, and was married to Adam Van Brocklin in 1864 coming to Madison county the same year. She resided on their farm near Alder until the death of her husband a few years ago, when she went to Seattle returning last year. At the time of her death she was making her home with her son James Neely by her former marriage, who is a resident of Sheridan. She was known all over the Ruby valley and was ever ready to care for the sick and dying in those early days when people were called neighbors though they had to travel many miles by slow methods to meet their nearest neighbor. The funeral service was held from the Alder hall Sunday afternoon, Rev. Anstice delivering a sermon appropriate to a life well spent. Interment was in the Nevada cemetery by her husband who had preceded her to the Great Beyond. •Montana Death Index, 1860-2007:
