Obituary: Choteau Acantha (MT), 28 April 1927 Well Known Pioneer Passes at Age of 56, After Long Illness Monday morning at five o'clock in the ranch home of the family in Belleview community, west of Choteau, occurred the death of Mrs. John W. Ward, 56 years old, and a resident of Teton county since 1899. Mrs. Ward was a sufferer from anemia and had been ill for several years during which time she had sought relief in hospitals here and Minneapolis. During the last few months of her life she was bedfast much of the time, and for weeks family and friends had little hope of her recovery. A woman of proud ancestry and more than ordinary attainments, Mrs. Ward had, until ill health forced her into comparative retirement, always been active in church and community affairs, and not the least afflictions was the knowledge that she was no longer able to devote herself to matters in which she was keenly interested. She read widely, was well informed on questions of the day, and held strong views on political issues and upon the duties and responsibilities of Christian citizenship. She also devoted a good deal of time to writing and a number of years ago, on a trip to Europe, wrote interestingly of her trip for publication in Choteau papers. Mrs. Ward was born Elizabeth Wynstanley in Haydock Parish, St. Helen's, England, a daughter of an extensive iron manufacturer of Lancashire. She was a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and an associate of Tonic Solfa College, London. Her father was descended from a long line of Wynstanleys whose names were prominent in English life and who traced their ancestry to Baron de Wynstanley of Wynstanley and Billings, who came to the Isles in 1066 with William the Conquerer. She and Mr. Ward were married in Great Falls in 1899 and immediately thereafter established their home on land which Mr. Ward had homesteaded in 1885 and had grown to a 1,000 acre ranch property. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Vincent Ward, who makes his home at Wardledge, the Belleview ranch, and Rupert, of Chicago, who came home some time ago to be with his mother. Another son, Frederic, was killed in France, fighting as a soldier of England in the World war. There are also three sister, one of whom, Mrs. Madge Lyson of Canada, was with Mrs. Ward during her last illness. Another sister lives in England and the third in Australia. There is one brother whose whereabouts are unknown to the family here. Locally, Mrs. Ward was president of the American Legion Auxillary to Choteau Post No. 6, was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal church and of the Episcopal Ladies' Guild, in all of which she had been an active worker, as she had been as a member of Teton's Oldest Settlers. She was well known throughout this section and was held in high regard by a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from St. Luke's church. Burial was made in Choteau cemetery.
