On last Wednesday afternoon just as the sun was beginning to drop into the shade of evening, Mrs Thos C Johnston gave up life's struggle and passed on to the Great Beyond. Her last illness covered but a few days. Her death comes as a severe blow to her aged husband and companion of fifty years. The stricken family have the sympathy of all in their hour of grief. Elizabeth Gauley was born at Pre-Emption, Mercer county, Illinois, about 72 years ago. She grew to young womanhood in that place, and on March 1, 1871, she was united in marriage with Thomas C Johnston, at Rock Island, Ill. She then left her native state and they came to Iowa, locating between Montezuma and Brooklyn. They lived on the farm until eighteen years ago, when they moved to Montezuma to the home in the west end of town, at which place she died March 23, 1921. Mrs Johnston was the mother of five children - two boys and three girls: Joseph Casper and Thomas Arthur, both of Deep River; Mrs Abbie Carmichael of Brooklyn, and Clara and Tassie at home. These children, with their aged father, mourn the passing of the devoted wife and mother. There are four grandchildren. Of her father's family, three brothers survive: James, of Rock Island; Thomas, of Tacoma, Wash; and John, of Reynolds, Ill. Mrs Johnston and her three sisters all died within a period of one year and ten days, Mrs Mary Allen of Montezuma, on March 13, 1920, and Jane Johnston at Deep River a few weeks ago. On the first day of the present month Mr and Mrs Johnston celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Fifty years they were devoted companions. A large gathering of friends came with joy and congratulations. On that day she seemed to feel real well, though her general health has been failing for about three years. A few days after the anniversary she gave her organ, an instrument on which by her own efforts and perseverance she had learned to play several hymns, to her only granddaughter, little Hazel May. Mrs Johnston could play and sing the chorus of several pieces, one of her favorites being "Sitting at the Feet of Jesus." Mrs Johnston was a home-body. Her thought was ever for the comfort and pleasure of her family. When a girl Mrs Johnston united with the Episcopal church at Preemption. On coming to Iowa she united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the church known as Pleasant Ridge, north of Deep River. After this church was disbanded her membership was transferred to the Deep River Methodist church. During the last three years she was seldom able to go from home. Mrs Johnston was in her usual health up to a week before the day of her death. She was taken quite sick in the night and did not arise the next morning. She rallied on Saturday and Sunday, but on Monday between nine and ten o'clock, suffered a stroke from which she did not rally, passed into unconsciousness and quietly passed away without a struggle. Her entire family was at her bedside, and also the brother, Thos Gauley. She has entered into rest. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon by Rev Lanning and interment was made in the Montezuma cemetery.
