The earliest known in the family line is Johan Michael Dotterer who married Margaretha (surname uknown) on 29 May 1709 in Stebbach, Germany. Johan’s wife Margaretha was born in Zaberfeld, Germany. Their son Rudolph Dotterer, born 29 December 1709 in Stebbach, married in Germany, but his wife’s name is unknown. They had two children: Johann Michael and Johann George Dotterer. Rudolph, his wife and two sons emigrated to America, probably arriving in the port of Philadelphia. Their first place of residence in America was in Colebrook, Dale, Berks County, Pennsylvania where their oldest son, Johann Michael Dotterer was born in January 1709. He was christened at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick County, Maryland on 29 December 1734. Their second son Johann George was born on 23 April 1734. The line of descent follows son Johann George who was also born in Colebrook, Berks County. He married Anna Catharina Baltzell (Balssel), a daughter of Hans Peter Balssel and Anna Barbara (surname unknown). They had eleven children. It was their third child, George Dottero who shortened his surname to Dutro, and it is from him that the line extends to Elizabeth Dutro Murray. George Dutro was born on 16 August 1760 in Berks County Pennsylvania. He married Catharine Kirchbaum (Kriegbaum) and moved to Ohio when the land opened up after the Revolutionary War. He settled in Blue Rock Township in Muskingum County Ohio, just south of Morgan County (where the Murray family lived.) Johan George and Catherine eventually raised eight children, who all led long lives: Jacob, Mary, Susanna, Margaret, George, Jr, William, Elizabeth, and Ruth. The fact that George, Jr. is specified as such, probably indicates that his father was now known simply as George Dutro, having dropped the Johan long before. The Dutros were known to be among the early settlers in Muskingum County. They are said to have “set out orchards.” George Dutro, Jr.’s son David was credited with being the first wagon-maker in the township. One of the David Dutro children was said to be the first birth in the township. Several of the Dutros held township offices early on. When George Dutro died he left a considerable estate leaving to his daughter “Betsy Murry” one sixth part of his estate at his wife’s death. Elizabeth (Betsy) had married Samuel Murray on 8 June 1813. Elizabeth Detro Murray’s mother was Mary Catherine Kriegbaum, a daughter of Johannes Conrad Kriegbaum and his wife Anna Marie Baltzell. She was born on 4 January 1797 in Blue Rock Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, the seventh of eight children. She married Samuel Murray on 8 June 1846 in Muskingum County, Ohio, a son of unknown Murray and Isabella Spray on 8 June 1813 in Muskingum County. They had twelve children: Loraina, Catherine, Eliza Ann, Nancy, Mary (Polly), Samuel, Rachel, Benjamin, Ruth, George Sylvester, Isabella, and John Spray. Samuel Murray, husband of Elizabeth Detro, died on 30 July 1853. He was buried in Emery Cemetery in Meigsville, Morgan County, Ohio. Elizabeth Dutro Murray wife of Samuel continued to live on the farm after Samuel’s death with her children who still remained at home. Before 1860, though, the farm was sold and some of the family members had already moved into other dwellings nearby. Elizabeth and Samuel’s daughter, Rachel who had married John Cooper along with their three children, Loren, Samuel and Albert had already left Ohio and had moved to Marion Township, Linn County, Iowa. The Civil War had already begun and Nancy’s son Orten had enlisted. Elizabeth, Nancy, Theotes, Electa, John Spray and his family, and George S. and his family joined with them and set out by wagon for Linn County Iowa. Arriving there Elizabeth, Nancy, Electa and Theotes all moved into one home, and each of the other brothers John S. and George S. moved into other nearby dwellings. Within a few short years, Electa married George Hardin on 5 April 1867, and a few years later would move to Highland Township, O’Brien Township, Iowa where she would spend the rest of her life. As to be expected, Elizabeth was the first to pass away at the age of 99 on 10 May 1891. She was buried in Oak Shade Cemetery, a few short blocks from where she lived out her last days.
