Read More	From Contributor: Joan E Murray (49031151) on September 30, 2020 Nancy Murray was born in McConnellsville, Ohio on 28 March 1821. She was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth B. Dutro Murray. Nancy never married, and she lived with her parents until after her father’s death in 1853. Her father’s will listed all his children by name. Orton, Theotes, and Electa were not mentioned in the will yet they lived in Samuel’s household. At a later time, they were proven to be illegitimate children of Nancy. After Samuel’s death, the family sold the property in McConnellsville and made plans to venture “west.” Two of her brothers – George Sylvester and John Spray, her mother Elizabeth (aged 66 years) at the time, and George’s and John’s wives and children and grandchildren were among the party. Nancy’s son Theotes and her daughter Electa also were among the group. Her oldest son Orton remained behind and enlisted in the Civil War in Ohio. Three of her other sisters, Rachel, Eliza and Mary had married in Morgan County and with their husbands and children traveled with George, John and Nancy. They arrived in Marion, Linn County, Iowa in the early 1860s, that is where Elizabeth, Nancy, Theotes, George, John and Rachel and her family would spend the rest of their days. The other two sisters and their families would move on in later years. Nancy’s son Orton enlisted in the 9th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Company B in October 1862. He was hospitalized in March 1863 with what most likely was “strep” throat, that ultimately resulted in a damaged mitral heart valve, and rendered him no longer fit for service. He was discharged from service on June 9, 1863 in Dennison U. S. General Hospital. He died in 1867 and was buried in Marion, Iowa in Oak Shade Cemetery. Nancy’s daughter Electa married in Marion and moved further northwest to O’Brien County. The gossip column in the Marion Sentinel often had snippets of information about the “comings” and “goings” of Marion residents. In one article it mentioned that Nancy Murray had gone to Sutherland, Iowa to visit. Sutherland is in O’Brien County. She also went off to visit relatives in Sanborn and Eagle Grove, Iowa. Nancy was active in clubs and organizations in Marion, most particularly the WRC (Women’s Relief Corps) affiliated with the Grand Army of the Republic. When Nancy turned 90 years of age, she was given two surprise parties. One party was given by the Harmony Guild of the Congregational Church, and the other by her two brothers and their wives who lived nearby. Nancy passed away suddenly on 6 November 1920 in her home where she resided with her son, Theotes. She was Marion’s oldest resident at the time. She was just four months short of her 100th Birthday. It was not easy to be the mother of three illegitimate children in the time period in which she lived, but she held her head high, became a contributing member of her community and was well-loved by all who knew her. Her close family may have known who fathered her children, but she never revealed his identify to others. It was a secret she and her family took with them to their grave.
