Mengel Passed Away Sunday Evening Death Followed Husband’s By a Month; Services Held Wednesday Mrs. George Mengel, Sr., passed away at her farm home five miles northwest of La Porte City Sunday evening at 8:15 o’clock at the age of 79 years after being bedfast for 19 days. Death was due to an embolism and complications. Death came to Mrs. Mengel just one month after the passing her her husband, the late George Mengel, Sr., on April 9. As Elizabeth Ballheim, she was born April 2, 1870, to Jacob and Eva (Fisher) Ballheim near Menominee Falls, Wis. When one year old she came with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm south of La Porte City. Later the family moved to the vicinity of Dysart, where she grew to womanhood. On February 16, 1887, she was united in marriage to George A. Mengel at Vinton and they established a home on a farm near Dysart. They lived in the Dysart vicinity and in Bruce township south of La Porte City until 29 years ago, when they moved to the farm northwest of here where her death occurred. Surviving are three sons, Henry, Archie and George at home on the farm; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Dunkelberg of Vinton and Mrs. Alvin Dunkelberger of La Porte City; 12 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one sister, Miss Anna Ballheim, who has been living in the Mengel home. Preceding her in death besides her husband were one daughter, Katie, her parents and several brothers and sisters who died in infancy. The Mengels had celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and were privileged to enjoy 62 years of marriage. Services Wednesday The body was taken to the Johannsen funeral home but later returned to the farm home where prayer services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. A funeral service identical to that of her late husband, was held at the Evangelical United Brethren church at 2 p.m. and was in charge of Rev. W.D. Winter of Dumont, former pastor here. He was assisted by the local pastor, Rev. M.E. Shank. The sons used at Mr. Mengel’s funeral “Rock of Ages” and “In The Garden” were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Burr, who were accompanied by Mrs. Jeroid Fardal. Casket attendants were six nephews, George Klar, Elmer Klar and Henry Thede of La Porte City, George Kempf of Riceville, Jerry Bunz of Dysart and Wm. Runyan of Waterloo. The body was laid to rest in the family plot in West View cemetery.
