Wienands Monday Morning Pioneer Resident Passed Away After Short Illness; Burial in West View The final summons of death came to Mrs. Elizabeth Wienands of this city Monday morning, Nov. 1, at 3:15 at her home here on Pine St. She was 89 years old at the time of her death. She had been in fair health for one of her years until recently. Four weeks ago she became ill with complications incident to old age but her condition was not considered critical until five days before her death, when she became bed fast. Pioneer Settler Mrs. Wienands, who was a pioneer settler in the community and one of the oldest residents of the city, was well known in the community. As Elizabeth Ballheim she was born Jan. 29, 1859, on the farm of her parents, Michael and Anna Marie Erlenbach Ballheim, near Menominee Falls, Wis., and grew to womanhood there. She was one of a family of 17 children, all but two of whom have preceded her in death. In June of 1883 she came with her parents to La Porte City, Iowa where she lived for a few months while a dwelling and farm buildings were being erected on a prairie farm her father had purchased four miles south of the city in Bruce township, Benton county. This farm was her residence until she married Henry Wienands of La Porte City Dec. 16, 1897 and they established a home on a farm east of town. Two years later they moved to Bruce township, where Mr. Wienands died August 16, 1921. She continued to farm for a time with her son Paul, coming to her home on Pine St. in May of 1926. Here she resided until her death. She leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Nina Wienands, at home, one son, Paul E. Wienands, of La Porte City, one stepson, Walter H. Wienands, Globe, Ariz., four grandsons, Dale A. Wienands, Waterloo, Dean Wienands and Richard Wienands, La Porte City and Gale W. Wienands, Vinton, one granddaughter, Mrs. Clifford Abernathy, Globe, Ariz., and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. John Ohrt of La Porte City and one brother, William Ballheim of Long Beach, Calif. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters and one step-daughter. Unites With Church Mrs. Wienands united with the church early in life. At the time of her death she was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church of La Porte City, which she joined more than 60 years ago. She was faithful in her attendance of the church and its organizations as long as her health and age permitted. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock from the Evangelical United Brethren church with Rev. M.E. Shank, pastor, in charge. Miss E. Josephine Miller and Mrs. Jerold Fardal sang, “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Jesus Lover Of My Soul.” They were accompanied by Mrs. E.R. McClelland. Casket attendants were neighbors and former farm neighbors. Relatives and friends from out of town who came for the funeral were from Corwith, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Vinton, Mt. Auburn and Buckingham.
