Read More	Highland Recorder May 6, 1904 Aunt Betsy Varner Dead On last Sunday evening, owning to the infirmities that usually come to the aged, Aunt Betsy Varner died at the home of her son, and only child, Samuel Varner, near Monterey, her last moments being peaceful, trustful and happy. Aunt Betsy was one of the oldest persons in the county. According to the family record she was born in August 1812. Making her at the time of her death, in her 92nd year. The middle aged and even older of our citizens remember back about war times and before, when she lived in Monterey, and their earliest impressions were that she had then passed the meridian of life. Aunt Betsy was the widow of Jacob Varner, who died in March 1845 (listed in 1850 Highland Census), and of the family of seven children born to them, only one remains. Two sons' were given to the Confederacy and by their comrades it was said of them that they were brave soldiers. Forty two years ago last Sunday George was mortally wounded at the battle of McDowell, was taken to Staunton where he died and was buried. David was killed at the Battle of Port Republic and bis body was brought home for interment. David belonged to the famous 31st Virginia. On Tuesday morning at the home of the deceased a funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. R. L. Eutsler, and then the earthly remains of the departed one were placed in a grave beside that of her husband who had more than half a century previously traversed the unknown way, and near her are the graves of all her children save the one soldier boy, and the son yet living. Morton's History of Highland states son #2, 4 & 5 died young. Daughter Sarah died. 1860 Highland Census Elizabeth Varner, 40 (should be 50); George, 24; David, 20; Sallie A., 11; Samuel, 8. 1850 Highland Census Jacob Varner, 45; Elizabeth Varner, 40; George Varner, 15; David Varner, 10; Solomon Varner, 2, Sally A. Varner, 1. The 1850 census shows that Jacob Varner family is living two households away from Daniel Varner family Jacob & Daniel were the sons of Peter & Ann (Cook) Varner.
