Read More	Born about 1852 Highland Recorder July 22, 1927 DEATH OF SAMUEL VARNER Following an illness of little more than a week’s duration, Samuel Varner, aged resident of this neighborhood, died on Sunday morning about five o’clock. While pneumonia was the culminating disease, Mr. Varner was a victim of a combination of troubles. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Peck of Durbin and Mrs. Lucy Hamrick, at home. He was a son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Varner, but had no accurate record of his birth. It is ascertained, however, with reasonable certainty that he was born in the year 1850, being 77 years old. Left an orphan, or virtually so, in early life, deceased was not a stranger to “hard knocks,” and while he moved in an humble sphere, he so ordered his life and deported himself as to make the influence of that life felt and appreciated in other circles, identifying himself with worthy causes and worthwhile enterprises. „ He had been a member of the Monterey Methodist church from boyhood, and as janitor as well as a communicant, he made a record for faithfulness and punctuality calculated to put to shame many upon whom fidelity has a stronger claim. His home was two miles north-east of town in the steep foot-hills, and the following summary of facts will show a record of humble service throughout the years that borders on the heroic: it is estimated that in the discharge of his duties as janitor, he made an average of four trips per week—a distance of four miles each time—and computed upon this basis, it is found that, during his forty years of service in this capacity he walked a distance of 33,280 miles, and he was never known to be deterred by weather conditions, coming through blinding snow-storms, drenching rains and plowing his way, when needs be, through snow drifts. All who are familiar with these facts agree heartily with the assertion made by his pastor in the brief eulogy pronounced on the day of his funeral, the substance of which was, that, if every member of the church would show a like faithfulness, have the same regard for their obligations, there would be no empty pews and the interests of the church would never lag. He made the greatest record for unbroken Sunday school attendance ever made by a member of the school & wore with pride a long string of badges for such distinction. Mr. Varner was also a member of the Monterey order of Odd Fellows and the Kingdom Builders organization, willingly filling such positions in these organizations as were assigned him, being derelict in none of his duties. As a private citizen he was law-abiding and the soul of honor. It is not too much to say that, from every angle of his humble sphere in life, his example was one that many might do well to emulate. The funeral, held at the Methodist church Monday morning at 11 o’clock was largely attended. Odd Fellows from the Monterey and Crabbottom lodges attended in a body, as did also the Kingdom Builders, six of the former acting as pall-bearers, and the ritual service of the order being used at the grave. The service at the church was in charge of his pastor, Rev. F. B. Wyand, assisted by Rev. N. C. Rice of Crabbottom and Rev. R. M. Flutter of Mill Gap. Friends placed many beautiful designs of natural flowers on his casket, an evidence of their respect for his memory.
