GIDLEY, JR. – Thomas William Gidley, Jr., was born September 12, 1910, son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Gidley. GIDLEY, JR. – Thomas William Gidley, Jr., was born September 12, 1910, son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Gidley. He attended the Malvern Public Schools graduating in May, 1929, going on to Iowa State College at Ames, but because of the "Great Depression" could not continue and came home to farming. On January 30, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served in New Caledonia in the Quartermaster Corps. In 1944 he returned to the United States, and was stationed at Camp Plauche, New Orleans. Tom married Elizabeth Beattie January 13, 1945 in her home in Malvern. They returned to New Orleans. However in March Tom was sent to the Philippine Islands where he served until his discharge December 31, 1945. He received a medal for military merit from the Philippine Government commending him "for the outstanding results achieved in organizing, training, and demobilizing the Philippine Army, recognizing guerrilla forces, recruiting Philippine Scouts and working with soldiers of another race in the remote places of the Philippine Islands." In 1957 Tom was appointed Acting Postmaster at Malvern. On July 31, 1959 he received his appointment as Postmaster from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He retired July 4, 1975. Mr. Gidley is a 50-year member of the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Assistant Chief and Chief. He has been an Ak-Sar-Ben Ambassador since being appointed in 1955. He is a member of the American Legion, serving many years as Officer of the Day for Memorial Day observances. He is a member of Silver Urn Lodge A. F. & A. M., O. . S., charter member of Malvern Rescue Unit, president of Library Board, member of Low Rent Housing committee, member of Liberty Memorial building board, and chaired the Mayor's Committee for recruitment of personnel for a medical facility. He served several years as Secretary of the Mill County Fair Association. Mrs. Gidley after graduating from Malvern schools, attended Linderwood College, St. Charles, Missouri, the University of Iowa and Pierce College of Business Administration in Philadelphia. She is a 50-year member of Delta Gamma sorority, Past Matron of Silver Urn Chapter O.E.S., D.A.R., Malvern Methodist Church. She has been active in the Republican party and served as County Vice Chairman several years. She was a member of the Malvern Park Board and served as president of the Garden Club and was active in Cub Scout work serving many years as a Den Mother. She is president of the Malvern Cemetery Association. During World War II Mrs. Gidley was a dispatcher for Southern Pacific Railroad. She was administrative secretary at the Glenwood State Hospital School for twenty-three years, retiring in January 1976. Mr. and Mrs. Gidley have one son, Thomas William III. The live in the home her parents built, where she and Tom were married.
