I noticed that some of the family trees in ancestry.com show Elizabeth's maiden name as Blair and show her as the daughter of Absolom and Nancy (Campbell) Blair. There is a birth record in ancestry.com for Elizabeth Blair, who was born January 3, 1852, to Absolom and Nancy (Campbell) Blair. However, the date of birth is different, and that Elizabeth Blair was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, which is over three hours from Franklin County, Kentucky. In the 1900 Census for Rich Hill, Livingston County, Missouri, Elizabeth was living with her husband, Bernard, and their children, Nellie, Fanny, and William. Also living in the household was their daughter Edna Kingyan and her family. In that census, Bernard and Elizabeth stated they were married in 1866, and Elizabeth's obituary, which I have transcribed below, stated that she married Barnet Harrod on March 6, 1866. This date agrees with the Kentucky Marriage Records, showing Barnett Harrod married Elizabeth Harrod on March 6, 1866, in Franklin County, Kentucky: Kentucky Marriages, 1785-1979 Barnett Harrod mentioned in the record of Barnett Harrod and Elizabeth Harrod Name Barnett Harrod Spouse's Name Elizabeth Harrod Event Date 06 Mar 1866 Event Place Franklin County, Kentucky -------------------- In the 1880 Census for Bald Knob, Franklin County, Kentucky, Barnett and Elizabeth Herrod were living with their children Ben F., Walter, James W., Edna J., Ann L., and John. Their son Ben F. Harrod died on June 5, 1912, in Montgomery, Missouri. Elizabeth signed his death certificate, and on that certificate she stated that Ben's father was Barnett Herrod, born in Franklin County, Kentucky, and she stated that her maiden name was E. Harrod, born in Franklin County, Kentucky. -------------------- Elizabeth daughter Frances (Harrod) Sims married Herbert Bourns on May 28, 1940, in Fairfield, Iowa. On that marriage record, she stated that her mother's maiden name was Blair. In the marriage records I have found for Elizabeth's other children, her maiden name is shown as Harrod. In the 1925 Census for Ottumwa, Iowa, her son William stated his mother's maiden name was Harrod. On her daughter Anna Reynolds' death record, her mother's maiden name was given as Elizabeth Harrod. Oddly enough, Elizabeth's death record also gave her mother's maiden name as Herrod. However, the informant for this information was probably one of her children, and I have noticed on some of those old death records where the child gave the information for their mother, they gave their mother's maiden name rather than the maiden name of their mother's mother. This abstract of information is on a list of vital records that the State of Iowa has, and the death records for 1920 have not been made public on familysearch.org or ancestry.com. The listing does not include the father's name of the deceased, and it does not include the first name of the deceased's mother. A family member can request a copy of the death record that contains all of this information from the State of Iowa. An Elizabeth Harrod, age 9, is shown in the 1860 Census for Franklin County, Kentucky, living with her father, Barnett Harrod; her mother, Narcissa; her sister Charity, age 13; and her brother, William, age 4. I do not know for certain if this Elizabeth Harrod is the lady this memorial is for. However, she did give one of her daughters the middle name of Charity, which was the first name of the sister living in that household. -------------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," Saturday, May 15, 1920: Mrs. Elizabeth Blair Harrod died last night at 6 o'clock, at the home of her son, William Harrod, 602 Summit street. She was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, May 2, 1852, and was married March 6, 1866, to Barnet Harrod. She had made her home with her son for the past ten years. She was a member of the Methodist church at Battonberg, Mo. She is survived by the sons, Walter H. and W.E. of Ottumwa, John M. of Kansas City, and the daughters, Mrs. Edna Kenyon, and Mrs. Lee Staats of this city, Mrs. H.G. Stuart of Hidmore, Mo., Mrs. T.L. Sims of Chicago. Her husband and four children preceded her in death. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Moroney's fuenral home. Rev. A.A. Heath will conduct the service. Burial in the Shaul cemetery.
