Born Elizabeth Bly Fleming in 1914 in Wisner, Nebraska, Mrs. McGill was the widow of Patrick H. McGill Jr., who farmed his entire life about six miles northwest of Wisner. Patrick McGill died in 1996. In her youth, Mrs. McGill and her mother, Bess Fleming, assisted in the operation of a pioneer Cuming County dairy operated by her father, William Fleming Jr. "We cleaned and sterilized every bottle – every day," she said. Her father milked the cows and made the deliveries. After attending Wayne State College, Mrs. McGill for five years taught to eight separate grades in a one-room country school house heated by a pot-belly stove. Many of her students went on high musical and academic achievement. More than once, sudden blizzards kept Mrs. McGill and her students from leaving the school house, sometimes for days. Mrs. McGill was honored as Nebraska Mother of the Year in 1979, receiving her citation in a ceremony at the state capitol followed by a luncheon in the governor's mansion. It was noted at that time that seven of Patrick and Bly McGill's 11 children were born in a farmhouse without electricity or running water. Music and singing were the glue that held her huge family together. Appropriately, more than 70 family members gathered Friday afternoon to sing Irish songs – including original tunes – at her hospital bedside. The steadily growing crowd caused Bergan Mercy Hospital officials to make the largest room in the facility available to the family. In the 1950s, Mrs. McGill, her husband and 11 children toured northeast Nebraska and performed as "The Singing McGills" at fairs and fests. In 2003, the family marked the 50th anniversary of their performance at the Cuming County Fair in West Point by appearing once again. Mrs. McGill accompanied her children on the piano. Daughters Rozanne, Kathy and Colleen went on to perform as a popular vocal trio for several years, often appearing at Omaha's Peony Park Ballroom with the Dick Wickman Orchestra. In 1971, Patrick & Elizabeth McGill were named the first king and queen of Wisner's annual Irish Festival. Following a singing performance that day, the Omaha World-Herald's Tom Allen in his column pronounced Patrick McGill as "Nebraska's Irish Bard." Three generations of her family have fanned out from Cuming County to become physicians, nurses, dentists, teachers, homebuilders, musicians and leaders throughout eastern Nebraska. Son Kenneth McGill is mayor of Humphrey, Neb. A life-long sports fan, Mrs. McGill rarely missed a game involving three generations of her family that included baseball, football, basketball, volleyball and other sports players, standouts and all-staters. Her late son, Dr. Clement McGill, won World-Herald all-state honors in football in 1963. This past autumn, Mrs. McGill kept an album of clippings on her grandson Dylan McGill, an all-state, sophomore quarterback, who led his Wahoo Neuman football team to the C-1 state championship game at NU's Memorial Stadium in which Pierce defeated Neuman in overtime. Mrs. McGill survived the flu pandemic of 1918, which affected her family. She also was a breast cancer survivor. She was an avid bridge player with a personality described by her children as "witty and direct." In addition of 62 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren, many living in the Omaha metro area and eastern Nebraska, Mrs. McGill is survived by daughters Rozanne Kenney, Kathryn Howard and Colleen C. Fogarty (James) of Omaha and Mary C. Gabriel of Seward, Neb. Surviving sons include Con W. McGill (Jan), Dr. James E. McGill (Ann) and Robert E. McGill (Diane) of Omaha, Patrick H. McGill III (Rita) of West Point, Neb., Kenneth (Diane) of Humphrey, Neb., Mark (Alison) of Wahoo, Neb. Her late son Dr. Clement J. McGill and his wife, Sheila, of Wahoo, died last June in an auto accident. She is also survived by sisters Peg Horner of Omaha, Patricia Fleming of Chicago and Bonnie Feller of West Point, Neb. Bly was also preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 3 brothers.
