THANK YOU, our family is truly grateful. __________________________________ Elizabeth Catherine "Bessie" MANSFIELD was born at home December 11, 1887 on the family farm in Douglas County, Nebraska. She was the first daughter and second child of four children born to George and Hannah (née KLEBES) MANSFIELD. Her siblings were: Herman Klebes, Clara M., and George Earl. Bessie MANSFIELD received her diploma during an evening program on May 13, 1904 consisting of a commencement address followed by a presentation of diplomas at the Elk City school. On March 15, 1906, at the age of eighteen, Bessie married Arthur ABRAHAM, age twenty-eight, in Valley, Douglas County, Nebraska. He was the son of John and Catharine (née BARTLETT) ABRAHAM. The newlyweds made their home in the Elkhorn River Valley about 5 miles north of the town of Valley. Arthur raised cattle, grew crops, and had an orchard. Bessie gave birth to their son, Russell M. ABRAHAM, January 2, 1907. Following the baby's birth, Bessie became ill with pneumonia and died on Tuesday morning, February 5, 1907. At the time of her death, she was nineteen and had been married for less than a year to Arthur. __________________________________ Newspaper Source: FREMONT DAILY HERALD, (Fremont, Nebraska) Friday, March 16, 1906, page 1 column 6. Cards are out announcing the marriage of Arthur Abraham and Miss Bessie C. Mansfield, which occurred at Elk City yesterday. These young people are among Elkhorn township's best and most popular people and the marriage unites two of the pioneer and most highly respected families of that township. The cards state they will be at home at Valley after April 1. __________________________________ Newspaper Source: The Valley Enterprise (Valley, Nebraska) Friday, February 8, 1907, page 1 column 5. A YOUNG MOTHER TAKEN. Only a few weeks ago a young mother brought into this world an innocent babe to comfort and bless her home and her life, but before the mother was able to assume any of the parental cares the dread disease of pneumonia took hold upon her and for several weeks her life hung as upon a tender thread. All that human skill could do was resorted to, but of no avail, and at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, the departing spirit swept through the gate on the other shore, leaving her young husband, Arthur Abraham, alone in the world to assume a double responsibility to the motherless babe. The very, very sad funeral at the Elk City church yesterday was one long to be remembered. The church altar was draped in white; great banks of white flowers were on every hand in sweet remembrance of that beautiful christian character who was an active member in that church and Epworth League. The church was filled to overflowing with kind friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect and to accompany the funeral train to the Elk City cemetery where the bride of a year ago was consigned. Bessie Mansfield Abraham was nineteen years old last December; she was born and brought up in this vicinity and was loved and respected by all who knew her. _______________________________
