During the previous week she fell in the house and broke her thigh and her advance age caused the injury to result fatally. Mrs. Haynes was born Oct. 3, 1840, and was therefore 88 [83] years, 2 months and 25 days old at her death. She was the daughter of Milton and Catherine Hodges, who were residents of Cobbs Creek, and she had lived all her life only a short distance from her place of birth. Sixty-five years ago she was united in marriage with Frances Reed Haynes, who survives her. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Leslie Soles, of Soles, Va.; Mrs. Clemmie Travis, of Redart; Mrs. Susie Shipley, of Cobbs Creek and Dr. J. W. D. Haynes of Mathews Court House. All of these children are still living, fine examples of the care and training of a mother whose good deeds are known throught this section of the state. Funeral services were held at Mathews Chapel Sunday, by Rev. D. W. Jackson, assisted by Rev. L. C. Moore and Rev. George H. McFaden, of Richmond. Rev. McFaden had been Mrs. Haynes' pastor thrity-two years ago, he knew her and her christian character and his tribute to her memory was touching in the highest degree. The remains were laid to rest in Haynes Cemetery. Mrs. Haynes had been a memeber of Mathews Chapel of the M. E. Church for more than 70 years. Her belief in its teachings was absolute and her life was a constant illustration of the faith she had. Her religion was practical and the large number who attended the funeral to pay their honors and respect was ample evidence of the place she held in the hearts of all who knew her. Her charity was distributed unstintingly. Her interest in her neighbors was such that none lacked for help or care and all felt the uplift from contact with her noble spirit. Wonderful stories are told of her beautiful acts and of the practical unassuming way in which she proved her Christian nature. Mathews County has lost one of its strongest influences for good; one of its best known and most beloved women. Cobbs Creek has suffered a loss which can scarcely be estimated and this entire section mourns for one who, through her own life, stood for all that is good.
