Captain Francis Reed Haynes, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Mathews, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. C. Soles, at Soles, Va., Tuesday, October 12th, after a lingering illness. Despite his advanced years Captain Haynes was remarkably vigorous in mind and body up to recent months and handled his varied interests with his well known efficiency and good judement. The funeral services were conducted at Mathews Chapel M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon by Rev. D. W. Jackson and attended by a large concourse of friends who gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to the departed one. Interment was made in Haynes Cemetery at the Church. The remains, in a casket which was covered with beautiful floral tributes, were carried to their last resting place by six grandsons of the deceased. Captain Haynes was 92 years of age and the son of the late Richard and Katherine Haynes. He was born in Gloucester County in the year 1834 but moved with his parents to Mathews County when a mere boy and spent most of his life here. He served as a young man in the Confederate army with the rank of Captain and returning home at the conclusion of the war devoted himself to the ordinary affairs of life in which he became conspiciously successful. Through thrift, industry and the indomitable will to succeed, coupled with great natural ability Captain Haynes was able to prosper to a marked degree and was for many years acknowledged as one of the most substantial citizens of the county. He was for a long time one of the foremost members of Mathews Chapel Church and contributed largely to its advancement financially and otherwise. Some three years ago he donated to the North Mathews charge the parsonage now used as a home for its pastor. A man of strong convictions and the courage to support them, a successful business man and of unquestioned probity and uprightness, Capt. Haynes possessed at all times the respect and esteem of those who knew him. The following children survive him: Mrs. C. C. Soles, Mrs. L. M. Travers, Mrs. V. V. Shipley and Dr. J. W. D. Haynes, as do eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. -------------------------
