Description	:	Elizabeth 'Alice' Cecilia McCready was born into the Catholic family of John and Ellen McCready on March 5, 1896 in Colfax County, Clarkson, Nebraska. They lived on a farm near Clarkson and one day while playing with her brother Tom in the loft of the barn, she fell through one of the hay windows in the floor of the loft, which they would pitch hay down into the end of a six foot wide feedway that ran down the middle of the barn between the stalls and stanchions. Read More	Elizabeth 'Alice' Cecilia McCready was born into the Catholic family of John and Ellen McCready on March 5, 1896 in Colfax County, Clarkson, Nebraska. They lived on a farm near Clarkson and one day while playing with her brother Tom in the loft of the barn, she fell through one of the hay windows in the floor of the loft, which they would pitch hay down into the end of a six foot wide feedway that ran down the middle of the barn between the stalls and stanchions. She knocked herself out, and came to with Tom standing looking down at her. She never told her mother about falling in fear of getting into trouble because she wasn't supposed to be playing in the loft. She always had a bald spot from the damage that she had did to her head and she always covered the spot with the way that she combed her hair and it was never noticed. They lived sixteen miles out of town so when they went to church on Sunday morning it took them three hours by horse and wagon to get there because the roads were so bad. They all bundled up under heavy blankets in the wintertime to go to mass. Then another three hours to get back home. So going to mass on Sunday was an all day affair. She attended Midland College and then married Blaine Wilson. Blaine had been in WWI and saw action in France. He was trained by the French for trench fighting and also drove a motorcycle. Blaine had no fear and wouldn't back away from a fight. WWI lasted for seventeen months. He was discharged in 1918. He married Alice in 1919. and they began their family. Eileen was born in 1920, Virginia 'Ginger' was born in 1922 and Alice was pregnant with James 'Jim' in 1922 when they moved to Sterling, Colorado. Blaine got a job as Deputy Sheriff for Logan County. Blaine had been on the police force for three weeks when he was told to watch for boot legger's that were selling bootleg whiskey from the back of some of the busnesses in Sterling, Colorado. They had heard there were some working from the back of a Barber shop so the sheriff told Blaine to go and check it out and he would be right behind him to back him up. Blaine went to check it out. He found four men and arrested them. He lined them up along the wall and had checked two of them for weapons and went on to check the other two. One of the men shot Blaine knocking him to the floor, a second suspect then took Blaine's gun and shot him in the chest a second time, that shot was an inch from his heart. Blaine survived long enough to identify the suspects and give an account of the incident. They took Blaine to the hospital but he died three hours later. The sheriff never showed up to back Blaine up. The townspeople called the sheriff a coward and he later lost his job. The townspeople also formed a vigilante group and went in search of the two killers. The Logan County sheriff's department didn't have benefits for their employees at the time, Alice was left to raise Eileen, Virginia 'Ginger' and James 'Jim'. She couldn't do it by herself, she needed help from her parents, Alice then took the children and went home to the farm in Clarkson, Nebraska. Her father wanted her to become a teacher becuse she had the education for it. She said she didn't want to do that because she wouldn't be able to be with her children and raise them. She decided that she wanted to take a beautician course so she could do that from her home. Her parent's paid the price of the course in Omaha, Nebraska. While she was going through Beauty School she worked as a waitress in Lee, Nebraska for the extra money. While working there she read an article in the paper. The article written was of the Duke of Windsor. He was travelling in the United States; and was at that time in Nebraska on a hunting trip with a group of men. That article had a picture of the Duke of Winsor in it. The Duke of Winsor came into the restaurant with his group to get something to eat. Alice recognized him from the article she had read in the paper. He began to talk to Alice, they started to talk about the dance that was coming up. He asked Alice if she would go to the dance with him. Alice told him," No I can't go with you because I am still in mourning over the death of my husband." The Duke of Windsor later abdicated on December 1936 so that he could marry an American woman named Wallace Simpson. Alice later ran into Francis 'Frank' Marion Whitt, whom she already knew because they had been neighbors in Sterling, Colorado. Frank's wife Katherine had died from a miscarriage when she was five months pregnant, one week after Blaine had gotten killed. They had a lot in common and they began to date and eventually got married. Frank had one child 'Glenn' and Alice had three. They began to add to their familly and had five more children. Francis 'Fritz' John, Catherine 'Tiny', Patricia 'Pat', William 'Bill', and Ronald 'Ron'. Alice continued to work as a beauty operator and had her shop out of her home to help raise their large family. She continued to work well into her seventies until her health forced her to sell her home in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska and move in with her daughter Tiny and her family in Grand Island, Nebraska. She lived with them until she had to be put into a nursing home in Grand Island, Nebraska. Later she was moved to another nursing home by her son Ron in Wayne, Nebraska. She died in Wayne, Nebraska on May 4, 1989 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Schuyler, Nebraska between Blaine and Frank. Alice's birth record was lost when Church that it was stored at burned down. Alice didn't know for sure if she was born in 1896 or 1897. The following was taken from the Wayne newspaper: Elizabeth ' Alice' Cecilia Whitt, 93, of Wayne, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Grand Island, died May 4 at Wayne of heart failure. Services were May 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Wayne. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery at Schuyler. Schumacher Funeral Home at Wayne was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Whitt was born March 5, 1896, to John and Ellen Butler McCready on a farm near Clarkson, Nebraska. She attended rural school in Colfax County and Midland Teachers College. She taught rural school in Colfax County for three years. She married Blaine Wilson in 1919 in Lincoln. The couple lived in Nickerson until moving to Sterling, Colo. Mr. Wilson died in 1922. Mrs Whitt owned and operated a beauty salon from 1926 until 1970 in Cedar Rapids . She married Francis 'Frank' Marion Whitt in 1930 at Fullerton and the couple made their home in Cedar Rapids, Mr. Whitt died in 1960. Mrs. Whitt had made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Waterman in Grand Island for 8 1/2 years. She also had been a resident of Lakewiew Nursing Home for 2 1/2 years and for the past 1 1/2 she had lived at the Wayne Care Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Alter Society, Sunshine Birthday Club, and the Legion Auzilliary Club in Cedar Rapids. Survivors include three sons, James B. Wilson of Vacaville, Calif., William P. Whitt of South Beloit, Ill., and Ronald U.Whitt of Wayne; and four daughters, Mrs. Duane (Eileen) Purcell of Longmont, Colo., Mrs. Ronald (Patricia) Kremlacek of Lynch, Mrs Virginia Pfiefer of Plattsmouth and Mrs. Donald (Catherine) Waterman of Grand Island; 35 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ella Kraus of Columbus and Katherine Sorrick of Stanton.
