Obituary February 15, 2009 Mrs. Elizabeth Creighton Rhodes, 95, of Queenstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at Easton Memorial Hospital, Easton. Born Sept. 24, 1913, in upper-Montgomery County, Barnesville, she was the daughter of the late, Samuel Creighton Jones and Beulah Nicholson Jones. She graduated from Dickerson High School, Class of 1930 and attended St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg. She worked as secretary in the Montgomery County Court House for the attorney to the Board of County Commissioners. On Aug. 11, 1938, she married Harry C. Rhodes at Barnesville in the St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 1942, she and her husband organized and operated the War Price and Rationing Board in Rockville. In 1943, she joined the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Silver Spring as the Secretary to the administrative director. In 1952, she and her husband moved to Queenstown, where he accepted the position as Superintendent of Schools. Mrs. Rhodes became very active in community affairs. She organized and worked for a number of years with the Cub Scouts in the Queenstown area. Mrs. Rhodes was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, near Queenstown and assisted in organizing the St. Peter's Altar and Rosary Society; she also was the leader of the choir for many years. In 1954, she joined the Queen Anne's County Garden Club, serving on many committees and established the Junior Garden Club. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution of the General Perry Benson Chapter. In addition to her husband, Dr. Harry C. Rhodes, she is survived by two sisters, Constance Chesley of Arlington, Va. and Ida Lutz Brown of Frederick, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Eleanor Bledsoe and Mryna Clark. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville. Burial will be at St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Queenstown. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated for Mrs. Rhodes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Queenstown.
