Below are verbatim excerpts from Donald Lines Jacobus, FASG [Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists], "Graves-Cruttenden-Stillwell: A Correction, The American Genealogist, 31 (1955): 172-174: "In short, John Grave(s) had but one wife, Elizabeth Crittenden, whom he married under the name of Stillwell because she was the young widow of Jasper Stillwell and that was then her correct surname. Jasper was buried 8 Nov. 1656, and his widow decently waited a year until 26 Nov. 1657 before she married John Graves. She was the mother of all his children. This is proved readily enough by the will of Abraham-1 Cruttenden, dated 14 Sept. 1681 [New Haven Probate 1: part 2:94], in which he gave L5 "to my daughter Elizabeth Grave." One clause reads, "I give my right of third division land to four of my grandchildren Vizt to Danll. Bartlet a fourth part, to John Grave a fourth part… John Grave can only be the young man born 27 Feb. 1658/9, the eldest child of John-2 Grave(s) by Elizabeth Stillwell who is thus proved to be have been Elizabeth (Cruttenden) Stillwell at marriage." "To make assurance doubly sure, Winthrop's Medical Journal under date of Guilford 1659 mentions the illness of "Graves his wife she was Elizabeth Crittenden," and that he "sent medicine by Isaack Crittenden." That is the year the eldest child was born, the John Graves named in his grandfather Cruttenden's will. This item with others based on the Winthrop Journal, appeared in print (in this quarterly) several years ago, and this writer's verified copy of early Guilford vital records was published herein even longer ago. One wonders sometimes whether it is worth the effort to try to make source records accessible to genealogical students who live far from the original sources when so many fail to utilize what is available in print." "The will of Thomas-2 Crittenden [New Haven Probate, 2:211] gave L6 to "my Sister Elizabeth Graves," proving that she was living 26 Jan. 1697/8 when the will was made. That was over two years after her husband's death. The tale of her two subsequent marriages to Sperry and Burwell… is sheer nonsense." Martha A.
