Elizabeth Dorothea Naughton was born July 26, 1902 at Lisle, IL, the daughter of Frank J. and Clara J. (Reiser) Yackley. She graduated I 1920 from Crystal Lake, IL High School. She attended college at DeKalb, IL and also at Northern State College in Aberdeen. She moved with her parents to Sully County, SD in 1923. On April 14, 1926 she married Joseph F. Naughton at Sacred Heart Church, Gettysburg. They farmed and ranched in the Sully Hyde County areas until her husband’s death in 1979. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June, 1976. From 1979 until her death, she made her home in Miller. She served on the election board for 16 years, was a volunteer for Cancer, Red Cross and Sister Kenny Institute for 25 years, was active in the Democratic party for many years and was in the teaching profession for 20 years. Following her retirement, she acted as declamatory judge for many years. She taught CCD for 10 years and was a choir member most of her life and was a 4-H leader for 15 years. In 1980 she was honored as one of South Dakota’s Eminent Homemakers. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and St. Ursula’s Band a member of the Catholic Daughters and Legion of Mary, a sponsor of the Bethlehem Club, St. Anthony’s Guild and an extension club member for 53 consecutive years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. James (Madonna) Lewis, Miller, Mrs. Marvin (Rita) Matthews, Wessington and Mrs. James (Ann) Goldsmith, Salem, OR; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Benno Yackley, Onida and Dr. James Yackley, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1979, a brother, Vincent in 1913 and a brother, Cuthbert in 976. The funeral mass was offered by Father Lawrence Marbach on Saturday, Oct. 23 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Burial was in St Ann’s Catholic Cemetery.
