Zukowski of Genoa and Fr. Adam J. Szmydt, of Minden read low masses on the side altars. Miss Kozial died in an auto accident Nov. 24, near Salida, Colo. Six cousins, Louis Sock of Silver Creek; Edward Ksiazek of Belgrade; Alfred Warholski of Columbus; Robert Wetovick of Kearney; August Wetovick, jr., of Fullerton; and Alvin Shemek of Fullerton, served as pallbearers. Relatives coming from a distance included Francis and Edward Koziol of Arlington, Va.; August Koziol of Omaha; Mrs. Frank Cuba of Omaha; Aloysius Koziol of St. Edward; Miss Rose Koziol of Juniata; Mr. and Mrs. John Parks, Mr. and Mrs. John Cieslik, Ben and Ted Koziol, Mrs. John Borczk, Mrs. Louise Matya, and Mrs. Frances Sempek, all of Omaha. **************************************** Thanks to contributor E Montrose Daily Press Montrose, Colorado November, 1948 GENE HAMMOND, EARL FAUBER AND DENVER GIRL FATALITIES IN THANKSGIVING TRIP TRAGEDY Donald Thompson and ‘Heinie’ Kock Hurt in Accident Thanksgiving brought sorrow to many homes in the Montrose community as news bulletins revealed that members of two promnient families of the city had been killed in an automobile tragedy that also took the life of the fiancee of one of the young men and sent two other Montrose youths to a Salida hospital with serious injuries. Killed in the accident, which occurred in U.S. HIghway 285 about 15 miles north of Salida after 10:30 o’clock, Wednesday night, were Gene M. Hammond, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hammond, Montrose; and Charles Earl Fauber, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Fauber, Montrose, and Miss Elizabeth Kozoll of Genoa, Neb., Miss Kozell was Hammond’s fiancee. Injured in the accident were Henry “Heinie” Kock, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Kock, Bostwick Park, and Donald Thompson, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Thompson, Orchard Addition, Montrose. Hammond was a junior at the University of Denver and Fauber was associated with a Denver engineering firm. The men were enroute to spend Thanksgiving with their parents and Miss Kozoil was accompanying Hammond to visit his parents. Fauber and Miss Kozoil were probably killed outright when the converible coupe in which the five young people were riding failed to negotiate a turn and overturned end over end several times. Hammond died in the Rio Grande hospital at Salida about tow hours after the accident. Koch was knocked unconscious but thrown clear of the car as was Thompson. TWO MONTROSE (Continued from page 1) moved to make riding more comfortable, Thompson regained the highway and walked through snow to a nearby farm —— to summon help and notify authorities. Three ambulances from Buena Vista and Salida were dispatched to the scene and the injured and —— were taken to Salida ——- Ptrolman Owens said it wans’t determined who was driving the convertible, owned by Hammond. The patrolman said that Fauber recieved multiple —— lacerations and bruises and that Hammond suffered a —- abdominal injury. Miss Kock, who is a stedent at Colorado A. & M. college, Fort Collins suffered a neck injury and Thompson’s right shoulder was injured. Location of the accident was placed at two miles south of Nathrop. The time has not been definitely established. Members of the Hammond famly believe the time may have been nearer midnight. A call was put through by the Chaffee county sheriff to Sheriff Arthur Sutton of Montrose to determine ownership of the wrecked car which carried Montrose license plates. The wrecked machine was towed to the Chevrolet Garage in Salida by Chick Brooks, who is a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Prewitt of Montrose. First reports indicated that one of the crash victims was a student named Woods and Montrose people were inclined to think that possibly Oliver Woods, star halfback and president of A club at Colorado A & M college, was a member of the party. His home, too, is in Montrose. Bodies of the two young men were returned to Montrose by Keith Kinsey of the Montrose Funeral Home. Hammond and Fauber were both verterans of World War II and were life-long friends. Thruout their scholastic careers they played in the same grade and high school bands.—— and Thompson, too were high school classmates and have been close friends for a number of years.
