JOHN PATTON, SR. was born ca 1774 in Pennsylvania, and died October 19, 1856 in Grayson County, Virginia. He married (1) THURZA (SEGAR) NOBBLETT, daughter of JOHN SERGAR and BETTY SERGAR. He married (1) THURZA (SEGAR) NOBBLETT, daughter of JOHN SERGAR and BETTY SERGAR. He married (2) NANCY ANN JOHNSON 1775 in Arundell, Md., daughter of AARON JOHNSON and ANN. Elizabeth Patton Elliott – Trekked to Calif. w/the Grigsby-Ide Party of 1845. Born about 1802. Married to William Bell Elliott in 1821, in Virginia. She and her family lived in Missouri before coming to California. She had eleven children. Alberon, Commodore, Emsley, William, Thomas, James, Celia, and Eliza Jane came to California. Churchill, Mary and Emily died in Missouri. James died in California at age five. In 1845 Elizabeth, William, and their children lived in Napa County on Dr. Edward Bale's Ranch, which was part of Rancho Carne Humana, between present-day St. Helena and Calistoga. They lived in a cloth tent in bear country, which was quite an experience, as you may see: The entire family had to spend the nights on a platform built in the forks of a mammoth oak tree, often watching helplessly while their uninvited guests below plundered the tent of all edibles. During the day the men frequently went on hunting expeditions; and in their absence Mrs. Elliot and the smaller children often had to take refuge in the trees to get away from prowling bears. Mrs. Elliot, however, was herself an excellent shot and of no mean prowess as a bear hunter. She and her family were at Sonoma in 1846 for the Bear Flag Revolt, and she is said to have furnished cloth and needles for the Bear Flag. Note: Re the Patton Cemetery where her parents are buried: This cemetery is on land that was owned by John Patton Sr., his first wife, Nancy Ann (Johnson) Patton, and his second wife Thursa (Segar) Noblitt Patton. The land was passed on to John Patton Sr’s son, Hosea Patton, and his wife Elizabeth (Hill) Patton. The land then went to Hosea Patton's daughter, Nancy Patton, and then to Nancy’s son, Thomas Patton, and his children. Mrs. Orpha Mae (Patton) Leagan was the last Patton to own this land, when it was sold in 1967. There are many unmarked graves in this cemetery. Some of these may be spaces where the remains were removed to another cemetery when a proposed hydro-electric dam would have covered this entire area with water. The dam project was eventually cancelled. Note also that some records show John Patton's first wife as Nancy & others Thursa. Research continuing to prove which was actually his first wife. I have records where he and Nancy had 6 children before she died. John Patton, Sr. married the 2nd time in Grayson County, Va. Aug 16, 1838 to Thurza Segar Nobblitt...born c 1788 in Grayson County, Va. Marriage performed by Rev. Wm. Carrico. Thurza died between 1860-1870 and is buried in the Patton Family Cemetery. Proof he was married to Nancy 1st.... DEED BOOK 3...PG. 199-200...GRAYSON CTY, VA. OCT. 5, 1813...John Patton and Nancy, his wife, sold to Hardy Jones of Surry County, NC $350.00 for 90 acres, previously part of John K. Cunningham Land. ALSO proof...DEED BOOK 5...PG. 123..GRAYSON CTY, VA. MARCH 29, 1826...John Patton and Nancy, his wife to Thomas Patton...$100.00 for 33 acres. ALSO proof: Thurza had a daughter named Sally Nobblitt before she married John. Thurza was 1st married to Isaac Nobblitt. (Per Grayson County, Va. Birth Records.
