Hiking through the mountains between Cloverdale and Calistoga in search of grizzly bears one day in 1847, explorer-surveyor William Bell Elliott came upon a startling sight: puffs of steam coming from the hillside. Sabra Eddy Carpenter Aug. 3, 1860. 1870 U.S. Census for Upper Lake Twp, Lake Co., CA: W B Elliot M 71 North Carolina; farmer Lucinda Elliot F 60 North Carolina Melvin M 26 Vermont; shepherd D Welch M 50 Ohio; laborer W.B.'s real estate property was valued at $2000; personal property at $400. William Bell Elliott History: William B. Elliott arrived in Napa Co., CA in 1845 along with William and David Hudson, and Benjamin Dewell among others. Note the Benjamin "Duel" listed in the 1850 census. He married William Bell Elliott's daughter, Celia. William Hudson and his family are living right next to the Elliotts. They are farmers. William Bell Elliott and William Hudson spent their first winter in the vicinity of Aqua Caliente, now known as Calistoga, Napa Co., CA. WILLIAM BELL ELLIOTT, father of Mrs. Celia H. Dewell, was born in 1788 in Randolph county, N. C, of English and Scotch extraction. In Grayson county, Va., he married Elizabeth Fatten [sic], and they first emigrated west to Missouri, coming from that state to California in 1845. Mr. Elliott was a leading member of the "Bear Flag party," and he and two others took General Vallejo to the old settlers' fort after the old General had been taken prisoner; but he was never even handcuffed. Soon after coming to Lake county Mr. Elliott put up the first gristmill here, in 1855. He had erected the mill originally at the head of Napa valley, where he operated it for three years before moving it and setting it up in Lake county. He built a mill race, diverting the waters of Clover creek to supply it and turn the waterwheel, but the only remains of the old mill now in existence are the stone buhrs, which lie in the yard of his old home, now occupied by his grandson, Will K. Dodge. The race has been filled in and its channel is used as a garden by Mr. Dodge's family. The house which Mr. Elliott erected, in 1855 (now occupied by Mr. Dodge), was probably the first frame dwelling in Lake county, and was certainly the most substantial residence in the county at the time. Mrs. Elliott died in October, 1859, at the age of fifty-seven years, Mr. Elliott died on the old place in Upper Lake. [Note: Her headstone reads Nov. 5, 1859, age 57] They were the parents of eleven children, of whom we have the following record: Churchill died in Missouri when twenty-one years old (unmarried), before the family came to California. Mary died in Missouri at the age of twelve years. Alberon was killed by the Indians at Pyramid Lake, while on his way to what were known as the White Pine mines; he married Henrietta Parker, and their two children, William and Jesse, both now deceased, grew up at Upper Lake; William left children, and some of his grandchildren now reside at Lakeport. Emsley was killed in Texas while discharging his duties as deputy sheriff, being shot while attempting to make an arrest; he left four children, two of whom are living at McCray station, in Mendocino county, north of Cloverdale. America Moore 14 Dec 1852, Sonoma Co., CA (California, County Marriages, 1850-1952); d. Aug. 13, 1894, Catron Co., NM. He is found in April 1867 as well as in 1872 & 1873 in the Calif. Great Registers voting in Paines Creek, Tehama Co., CA. He is buried in Big Dry Creek Cem., Pleasanton, Catron Co., New Mexico, Memorial 93592124. Wife America Moore Elliott, b. Jul. 16, 1839, Missouri; d. Feb. 2, 1893, Fortuna, Humboldt Co., CA. She is buried at Sunrise Cem., Fortuna, Humboldt Co., CA; Memorial 99843436. They had five children. Notes for Commodore: The 1860 U.S. Census finds Commodore & "Mary R. Elliott" & Celia Moore, 8 yrs residing in Clear Lake Twp, Napa Co., CA (before Lake Co. existed). Commodore & America were divorced at least by 16 July 1878 when she married J.C. Burge, Lake Co., CA. She later married Reuben Cameron in Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA. It seems America was mistranscribed as "Mary R." Cela Moore could be their daughter with "Moore" as a middle name. The 1880 U.S. Census for Lakeport, Lake Co., CA lists Joseph C. Burge with wife "Elizabeth" (obviously America by her age & state of birth) with 5 stepchildren with surname of "Elliott". The children (all born in CA) are listed as: Florence, 17 yrs; Henry, 12 yrs; Elizabeth, 10 yrs; Mary, 8 yrs; & Burt L., 6 yrs. Emily died in infancy in Missouri. Celia H. married Benjamin Dewell. Thomas, a farmer, living on Clover creek, in Lake county, married Ellen Dennison and has three children. William died in Texas, unmarried. Elizabeth Jane, born December 15, 1841, first married Charles Perkinson, a pioneer of Lake county, by whom she had two children, a son who died and Clara Mabel, Mrs. Wilson, with whom she is now living at Fort Bragg, Mendocino county; by her second husband, Samuel K. Dodge, she had three children, one son and one daughter dying, and William K. surviving and living on the old home place of his maternal grandfather, which his mother owns; her third marriage was to Henry Wilson, who is also deceased. James, the youngest child of William B. Elliott, died when five years old; he's listed in the 1850 census in Sonoma Co., CA, so he must have died after the census was taken. According to Anita Crabtree, US GenWeb Lake Co., CA Coordinator, William Elliott came to Lake Co. in 1854 and in 1873 he and Thomas Maxwell each deeded a small piece of property to the Upper Lake Cemetery, giving the Cemetery about 3 and 1/4 acres at the start. This land included Cemetery Hill. Both William Elliott and Thomas Maxwell are buried there in the original part of the cemetery. Note: The dates on this memorial are at times a bit askew. Data came from various sources, some of which produced discrepancies. This sometimes happen in dealing with history. Also between moving his grist mill from Napa Co. to Lake Co., William operated a wayside hotel in Santa Rosa (on Mark West Creek).
