Read More	Friday, April 21, 1939 The Columbus Telegram Columbus, NE Pg # 4 Elizabeth "Elsie" (Karges) Schilz Mrs. Elizabeth Schilz, Pioneer Matron, Succumbs Wife of Early Business Man Saw Growth of City From Village Following illness since Easter Monday, Mrs., Elizabeth Schilz, 88, well-known Columbus matron who resided at 2116 Eleventh Street, died at 3:10p.m. yesterday. Death was directly attributed to an attack of influenza and complications incident to her advanced age. She had been bedfast since Easter. Four years ago, Mrs. Schilz broke her hip in a fall and since that time had been unable to be around much. Wife of one of the first businessmen of Columbus, Mrs. Schilz resided in the city during most of her mature life and saw the city grow from a small village to its present size. Born Miss Elizabeth Karges near Frankfort, Germany, Jan. 12, 1851, Mrs. Schilz came to America at the age of 16 with her parents, who resided first in Milwaukee, and two years after arrival in this country, came with a group of pioneers to Nebraska, settling near Silver Creek. A year later she came to Columbus, where she was married to the late William Schilz, pioneer Columbus shoe manufacturer, Jan. 11, 1874. Mrs. Schilz resided all but one year of her live since marriage at the family home at 2116 Eleventh street. Mr. Schilz passed away Apr. 16, 1923. Devout Church Member Devout member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic church, Mrs. Schilz was one of a small group of pioneer women who devoted much of their time in early years to the making of church linens. Her life's hobby was needlework, and she spent much of her leisure in quilting, knitting and handiwork, as well as in her flower garden, which was also a source of much satisfaction to her. She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and is a former member of the Ladies' Altar society. Surviving are Mrs. Eva Berney of Omaha; Frank of Ogallala, Martin of San Francisco, Mrs. G. F. Jackson of Omaha, Fred, at home, and Mrs. Fred Gerber of Columbus Three children born to the union died in infancy, a daughter, Sister Epiphania, passed away in 1906, and another daughter, Mrs. John McPherson, died in 1930. She has 29 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Monday, with Father Athanase officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. The body will be taken from the McKown funeral home to the home Saturday afternoon, where it will lie in state until the hour of the funeral.
