Established Shoe Store In Columbus Nearly 50 Years Ago; Funeral Will Be Thursday William Schilz, numbered among the pioneer business men of Columbus and one of the original organizers of the fire department, died at this home, 2110 Eleventh street, at 5:30a.m. today. Death was due to diabetes and complications. He had been in failing health since suffering a paralytic stroke four years ago. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Charles at St. Bonaventure's church Thursday at 9:30a.m. with burial in the parish cemetery. Mr. Schilz was one of the founders of St. Bonaventure's church and was one of the active members of the parish committee that secured the site for the edifice. He was also a charter member of the Columbus fire department, being one of the group of men who formed Engine company No, 1 on April 30, 1874. He has been on the honorary list of the department for many years. Fraternally, he was identified with the Catholic Knights of America, retiring only recently from the office of financial secretary of Columbus branch. Born in Coblenz, Germany, March 20, 1848, Mr. Schilz came to America with a brother when he was 17 years old. He spent several years in Illinois and then came to Columbus in 1873. In the fall of that year he bought a little shoe store and cobbler's shop, and for more than 34 years conducted a retail and wholesale shoe business, manufacturing many of the shoes he sold. When the business outgrew the little frame building it first occupied, he built the brick block on Twenty-sixth avenue between Twelfth and Thirteenth street now occupied by the Baer Shoe company, to whom he sold the business when his health began failing four years ago. On Jan, 11, 1874, Mr. Schilz married Miss Elizabeth Karges. His wife and their three sons and four daughters survive him. the latter are; Mrs. Joseph Berney, Mrs. Fred Gerber, Fred and Miss Lucy Schilz, of Columbus; Martin of Silver Creek; Frank, of Ogallala, and Mrs. G.F. Jackson, of Lincoln. They were all at his bedside when death came, with exception of Frank, who will arrive today from Ogallala. __________________________ Wednesday, April 18, 1923 The Columbus Telegram Columbus, NE Pg #2 Relatives here received word of the death of William Schilz at his home in Columbus.
