ELIZABETH J* MARCY DIES: WIDOW OF VETERAN EDUCATOR. _________ Prominent in the Methodist Episcopal Church at Evanston and Earnest Worker in Cause of Home Missions. _________ Mrs. Elizabeth J* Marcy, wife of Prof. Oliver Marcy who was acting president of Northwestern University from 1876 to 1881, died of bronchial pneumonia yesterday at her residence, 1703 Chicago avenue, Evanston. She was a descendant of the Pilgrims who landed in America in 1630. Her husband was a member of the faculty of Northwestern University for many years. As head of the Methodist Home Missionary society of Evanston, she founded the Marcy Home in Chicago over fifteen years ago. He retired as head of the society ten years ago on account of her advanced age but remained active in Methodist missionary work in Evanston. Funeral services will be held in the First Methodist church of Evanston at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. Interment will be at Wilbraham, Mass. * Name was Elizabeth Eunice Smith Marcy -- well known throughout the country for her involvement in Methodist missionary societies and as the writer of popular hymns,most famous being "Out of the depths of Thee I cry", which is in the Methodist hymnal. Marcy was especially active in national temperance reform and was involved with the founding of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1874. In 1883 Marcy founded the Marcy Home on the north side of Chicago to aid immigrant workers and their children.
