Description	:	ELIZABETH FLICKINGER was born in Alsace, France on April 12, 1807, which was under French control at the time. She was the youngest in her family of three boys and two girls. Read More	ELIZABETH FLICKINGER was born in Alsace, France on April 12, 1807, which was under French control at the time. She was the youngest in her family of three boys and two girls. Her father had died when she was very young. Elizabeth’s mother decided to start the family on a journey to America around April 1817. Elizabeth’s brother, Ludwig, was married by this time, so there were seven in all who booked passage from Europe to America on a vessel headed to New Orleans. Due to “unsettled conditions in Europe” and unfavorable weather conditions, the family was detained on board the ship in the port from April until October 1817. “A child was born to Ludwig and his wife on shipboard.” Both mother and child died and were buried on an island in the North Sea. Elizabeth’s mother passed away on the ship while in the “Gulf of Mexico, but before arriving at New Orleans.” The ship was quarantined after arriving in New Orleans and passengers were not allowed off the ship until March 1818. Elizabeth’s three brothers were able to find employment, and her older sister, Salome, worked as a housekeeper. This is the time when the family met Charles Augustus Aufranc and his brother Jonas. Charles was born in Canton, Bern, Switzerland, Nov. 27, 1788. “He descended from a long lived, sturdy well-educated French family of the ruling class in Switzerland.” He and his brother, Jonas, migrated to Cuba in 1807. A few years later they moved to New Orleans. Charles worked on a sugar plantation and Jonas secured a job on the police force. It was in New Orleans that Charles met his future wife Elizabeth Flickinger. Unfortunately, all three of the Flickinger brothers fell ill with yellow fever and died. In the spring of 1822, Elizabeth Flickinger at 15 yrs. old married Charles then 33 yrs. old. Salome Flickinger also married and moved to Philadelphia. After about twelve years of marriage, Charles and Elizabeth had their first child Louisa. In 1835 the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and settled in Blue Ash on a small farm. Four additional children were born during the eight years they lived at Blue Ash: Mary Justine 1837; Elizabeth 1838; Augustus 1840; and Esther 1843. Charles’ brother, Jonas, who had been ill for a number of years, died. Charles decided to purchase land in 1843 near Tylersville, Union Township, in Butler County, Ohio. Three more children were born: Magdalena 1846; Sarah May 1848; and Amelia 1850. Charles died on October 3, 1843. Elizabeth lived as a widow for almost 34 years and died on June 30, 1896. Charles and Elizabeth plus all of their children except Louisa are buried in Union Township Cemetery, which is now called West Chester Cemetery. It is located in West Chester, Butler County, Ohio.
