Ennis, of Shelbyville, Chokes to Death While Attempting to Swallow a Mouthful of Food. From yesterday's Shelbyville Herald: Mrs. E. J. Ennis, of this city, met with a sad death Friday night Last Wednesday night about 9 o'clock, while eating a lunch of roast beef, light bread and milk, on attempting to swallow a small mouthful, it lodged near the stomach in the oesophagus, or tube that carries the food to the stomach. She did not feel alarmed at first, and a physician was not called in until 1 o'clock the next morning. However as soon as Dr. Carson was called he at once realized the serious results that might follow, and Drs. Dimmlt and Turner were called in for consultation. After three efforts with the stomach tube, which were very painful to Mrs. Ennis, the obstruction was removed, or at least enough of it so that she could swallow and retain the liquid that she swallowed. However, Mrs. Ennis failed to rally, but continued to grow worse until 10:30 Friday night, when she died. Mrs. Ennis was born July 30, 1829, in Buckingham county, Virginia; was married to Joshua M. Ennis July 8, 1847 in Lewis county, Missouri. Immediately after her marriage she came to this city with her husband and lived here until her death. Her husband died June 11, 1889.
