July 12, 1939 - Carroll Daily Herald - After a long illness, Mrs. August F. Maystadt died at her home, 215 North Clark Street, at 3:45 p.m., Tuesday. Mrs. Maystadt had been confined to bed since suffering a paralytic stroke last summer. Her condition had remained about the same until the last few days, when she failed rapidly. She passed away at the age of sixty-nine. With the exception of Mrs. Walter Goecke of Red Oak, all of her children were with her when she died. Mrs. Goecke, who had been vacationing with her husband and son, John, and Mr. Goecke's mother, Mrs. John Goecke, of Carroll, were at Denver when word reached them of Mrs. Maystadt's serious illness. They started for Carroll at once, but were unable to reach here before Mrs. Maystadt had passed away. They arrived here early Wednesday morning. The body was taken this afternoon from the Kircher-Dietrich Funeral Home to the family home on North Clark Street, to rest there until the time of the services. Rites will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning at St. Joseph's Church, with the Very Rev. P.T. Lynch reading the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery beside her husband, Who preceded her in death by less than four months. Mrs. Maystadt had always lived in Iowa. She was born Elizabeth Katherina Schwartzkopf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Schwartzkopf, at Norway, Benton County, Ia., Jan. 20, 1870. When she was three years old she moved with her parents to Sac county. Sept. 9, 1890, she married August F. Maystadt at Wall Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Maystadt located on their farm near Wall Lake on which they made their home until March 1, 1910 when they moved onto their farm two and one-half miles north of Carroll on Highway No. 71, which is now the home of their son, Michael J. Maystadt. Retiring in February, 1938, they came into Carroll to reside. Mr. Maystadt passed away March 24, 1939. Mrs. Maystadt was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the Married Ladies Sodality of the church. She is survived by eleven children: Anthony Maystadt, Carroll; Mrs. Theodore Miller (Katherine), Norman, Neb.; Michael J. Maystadt, Carroll; Mrs. B.J. Olberding (Mary), Denison; John Maystadt, Chicago; Mrs. M.A. Wattier (Rose), Carroll; Joseph P. Maystadt, Carroll; Mrs. Walter Goecke (Ann), Red Oak; Margaret Maystadt, Carroll; Frances Maystadt, Ridgeway, Illinois; and Henry F. Maystadt, Carroll. One son died in infancy. Mrs. Maystadt also leaves thirty-three grandchildren and one brother, John Schwartzkopf of Greeley, Kansas. Another brother Michael Schwartzkopf died in 1916.
