The accident, according to State Trooper James (Whitey) DeArmond, one of the invetigating officers, was approximately 100 feet south of the intersection. Mrs. Long was attempting to cross from the east to the west side of the pavement when she was hit by a southbound vehicle operated by Claude Thompson, 2225 South Boots Street, Marion, a mechanic for the Fox Deluxe Brewing company. In the impact, Mrs. Long was carried 50 feet down the highway and dropped on the right side of the right-of-way. NOT GOING FAST. Thompson, who was reported by investigators to have been driving about 40 miles an hour, stopped his car within 120 feet of the mishap. Mrs. Long had been helping women of the Bachelor Creek Church of Christ in serving food at the Laycox Sales barn during the day and was en route to her home, riding with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hegel at about 9:30 o'clock. They stopped at the Roger Vrooman Service station (formerly Poorman's coorner) at Roads 15 and 115. Mrs. Long ran across the road to leave some pans at the Jesse Shellenbarger home, and a few seconds later started back across the pavement to the car. According to Deputy Coroner Walter Wright, North Manchester, Mrs. Long reached the middle of the road and hesitated as cars were passing. Thompson going in a southerly direction and an unidentified person in the opposite way. After briefly hesitating in the center of the highway, Mrs. Long stepped in the path of the southbound car. Thompson told State Troopers DeArmond and Elton Bodey, Peru, that he did not see the woman until she was immediately in front of his car. The deputy coroner reasons that death was caused instantly from a broken neck and a fracture of the left leg above the ankle. He termed the fatality an unavoidable accident, thereby absolving the driver of any blame. The driver of the northbound machine stopped mementarily and then sped away. NATIVE OF SWITZERLAND. Mrs. Long, whose Christian name was Elizabeth, was born in Switzerland, Aug. 20, 1874 the daughter of John and Anna (Bockman) Sutter, but had been a resident of Wabash county for 60 years. She was married Dec. 10, 1891 to Alex Long, Wabash, ho preceded her in death March 9, 1940. Mrs. Long was a member of the Bachelor Creek church and the M.N.M. and Stitch and Chatter clubs. The body was taken from the Jones Funeral home to the residence on Wabash R.R.1 Thursday. Funeral services will be held in the Bachelor Creek church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon with the Rev. E.E. Isenhowewr, pastor, and the Rev. Harry Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Long Wilcox, and one son, Howard Long, both of Wabash; three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Kuss, Kalamazoo, Mich., Mrs. John Schneider, Elkhart, and Mrs. James Jolly, Kalamazoo, and one brother John Sutter, Willard O., Four grandchildren also survive.
