The Elihu Plumb home in Sauk County was a log cabin beside a small stream and at or near the base of one of the typical bluffs surrounding the prairie and of that area. These bluffs were tree covered with oaks and beautiful white birch trees. Cordelia E. Ricker (Spirlock) visited the old home in late fall 1910 and the log cabin that the Plumb family had lived in was still standing but the stream was dried up part of the year (that was 49 years later). In 1861 when the Elihu Plumb's arrived in Washington, William Plumb was living in a log cabin beside a spring at the foot of a hill later known as the Sugar Loaf Hill on Rocky Prairie - 1861-62. Winter was very severe there and they must have suffered from the cold and the tiny living quarters. The Elihu Plumbs later lived in a house at the north edge of Rocky Prairie and remained there the rest of their lives. They are buried in a pioneer cemetery on Bush Prairie, near Tumwater. It has been long neglected and I have never found any Plumb markers. The cemetery records seem to be lost, too. Elihu B. Plumb and family arrived in December 1861 after a six-month trip from Wisconsin. Elihu and his family traveled the Oregon Trail until they heard about an Indian uprising, then they headed north from Landers cut-off in Wyoming. They continued north into Montana and over the Mullen Trail. They were the first wagon train over the Mullen trail and met Lt. Mullen on their journey. Elihu and Elizabeth Plumb traveled west with their two-year old daughter Addie Estelle; 12 year-old foster daughter Cordelia E. Ricker and son Leroy. Other children were born later in Washington Territory. Elihu became the Postmaster at Plumb Station when it was established in 1879.
