Mrs. Elizabeth [Reeves] Adams passed away at the home of her son, Bert, in Mikado on Tuesday, May 1, 1934, after an illness of about two weeks. Mrs. Elizabeth [Reeves] Adams passed away at the home of her son, Bert, in Mikado on Tuesday, May 1, 1934, after an illness of about two weeks. Mrs. Adams was born, 96 years ago, in England and has been a resident of Alcona County for 50 years. She was married to Frederick Adams, who preceded her in death, passing away in 1927. She leaves to mourn her departure two daughters; Mrs. Rose Ross of Saginaw and Mrs. Maggie Emerson of Mikado and four boys; William, Fred, Eugene, and Bert all of Mikado. The funeral services were held today, May 3rd, from the Baptist church in Mikado with Rev. Brown in charge. The remains were laid to rest in Springport cemetery. From the Review, Thursday, May 3, 1934 From great-great-granddaughter Doris in 2005: "Elizabeth Sophia Reeves was severely scalded on her head by hot porridge when she was on the boat coming from Scotland [sic] to Canada and she lost most of her hair. She was about 5 feet 5 inches tall, thin and severe looking; a generous person, good seamstress and cook, though very frugal. At Christmas time she would always give practical presents, such as yard goods to make shirts and dresses. They weren't rich, but they, at least, had enough money for the fare to come to Canada and then Michigan. It wasn't long before they started buying up property. She didn't like girls, all she wanted was boys but she had a couple of daughters, anyway. She was very "English" and whenever the grandchildren went to visit them they had to sit very straight in uncomfortable hard chairs. They weren't allowed to speak unless they were asked a question, and she always told them to keep their shoulders back. They sure didn't like to visit them very much. Elizabeth had two relatives that had died of consumption and they thought it was caused by slouching when they were young."
