They were the parents of 8 children: Emma (Kranz), Jeanette, Martin, Christina, William, Mary, Wilhelmina, and a daughter who died in infancy. April 16, 1908 - Carroll Times - Last Thursday morning there passed away at her home at Lidderdale, Mrs. Elizabeth Emmick, beloved wife of August Emmick, aged 65, years, 4 mos., 10 days. She was seized with a violent pain Wednesday forenoon, which caused her husband much alarm and he sent for physician and also phoned to their children. No correct diagnosis of her case seemed possible. Subcutaneous injections were made to alleviate the pain and it seemed that she was doing much better under the remedies applied. At 5 o'clock next morning her daughter Mary noticed an alarming change. She called her father and telephone messages brought her children to her bedside. The call for the physician sent in at once proved futile, she passed away at 5:30 o'clock a.m., April 9th. Departed, Elizabeth Werning, second eldest of nine children, was born Nov. 29th, 1842 at Daugerode, Rodenburg, Kurhessen, Germany of devout parents. In accordance with the custom there she was baptized the Sunday following her birth. She attended school in her native village and was duly confirmed at the age of 14. She came to America with her parents in 1870 and settled in Benton Co., Iowa. It was there that she was shortly thereafter united in marriage with August Emmick, a countryman. God blessed their marriage with eight children: two sons and six daughters. Of these one girl died in infancy, and the following survive: Mrs. Adam Krantz, Newhall, Iowa; Mrs. Ben Maus, Echo, Minn.; Mrs. Ed. Albers, Sheridan twp, Carroll co, IA; Mrs. F.W. Walenberg and Miss Mary Emmick and Martin and William Emmick, all of Lidderdale. Miss Mary is the only one remaining home with her parents. They were all present at their mother's funeral. There were also present her sister and brothers as follows: Mrs. Geo. Krantz, Newhall, Ia.; Martin Werning, Newhall, Iowa; Gus. Werning, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Wm. Werning, Emory, S.D. Two brothers, Conrad and Anton Werning of Newhall, Iowa could not be present owing to illness in their families, nor could her sister, Mrs. Peter Happle, Von Home, Iowa, be present for similar reasons. One sister, Mrs. Happle, died two years ago at Courtland, Neb. Mr. and Mrs. Emmick came to Carroll county, Iowa in 1877, settling in Grant township, on the farm now occupied by their son, Wm. Emmick. There for 29 years they shared joys and sorrows, rearing their sons and daughters to good respected men and women. Their children having settled in homes of their own, the aged parents removed to Lidderdale, not quite two years ago to take life easier, but, alas! God in his inscrutable wisdom called her hence and her loved ones can but long for the final union in the great beyond. Mrs. Emmick lived faithful to her confirmation promise in striving to live as a true member of the Lutheran church. In the year 1902 she united with the Ev. Lutheran church, Grant township, and was a diligent attendant at the services thereof. She was one of the attentive worshippers at the services the Sunday before going "home." The funeral was conducted by Rev. A. Daugs Saturday afternoon at one o'clock. He spoke of the Christian life of the departed, how in her obedience of the words of Christ, "Do this in remembrance of me," she had prepared for the fulfillment of that promise, "Whosoever eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life," by communing regularly. She had sighed and prayed for God's help and blessing ere she passed away. The loving mother, wife, neighbor and friend is beyond all earthly pains and troubles. In the hope that her good example may live as the best fruit of her life on earth, and that the bereaved ones may find their best consolation in her Christian death, we invoke for them that, divine blessing — the great source of all balm for grief and sorrow at parting from our loved ones.
